Martín Demichelis will return to the Allianz Arena on Saturday, but this time, he will be in the opposing dugout as RB Leipzig head coach when his side faces Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga.
The Argentine has a deep connection with Bayern, having spent 12 years at the club as both a player and a coach. His time in Munich helped shape his career and his personal development, making this weekend’s reunion a particularly meaningful occasion as he continues his journey in management.
Demichelis is excited to see familiar faces again, but he also has a job to do against the club that played such an important role in his life.
“I lived in Munich for many years and represented FC Bayern both as a player and a coach. Returning to the Allianz Arena now with RB Leipzig is something special for me. I’m looking forward to seeing some familiar faces again, and above all to the match itself. Because, whilst I have the utmost respect for FC Bayern, I naturally want RB Leipzig to come out on top on Saturday. FC Bayern shaped me over a total of 12 years as a player and later as a coach – and as a person too. It was always my dream to be a coach in the Bundesliga. I’m very proud that I’m now able to fulfil this dream at a top club like RB Leipzig,” Demichelis told FCBayern.com (as captured by @iMiaSanMia).
There is plenty of respect and affection in those words, but Demichelis will not be returning to Munich simply to reminisce. He wants Leipzig to leave the Allianz Arena with three points, and Bayern will need to make sure his emotional homecoming does not turn into a successful afternoon for the visitors.
For Bayern Munich supporters, Demichelis remains part of the club’s history, having contributed to its success on the pitch before moving into coaching. Now, he has the opportunity to establish himself in the Bundesliga as a head coach, and Saturday presents a major test against the club that helped prepare him for this next chapter.
The reunion will undoubtedly mean something to Demichelis, but once the whistle blows, sentiment will take a back seat to the battle for Bundesliga points.
