Michael Smith apologises and makes a striking promise for 2027: "Straight away walking out I've missed it"
Michael Smith (2)

Michael Smith made a clear promise to his supporters after beating Rob Owen at the Swiss Darts Trophy. The former world champion has regularly missed tournaments in recent years because of injury, but aims to play a full schedule in 2027. During his on-stage interview in Basel, “Bully Boy” apologised for his prolonged absence.

The 36-year-old Englishman has endured a difficult spell for some time. Since winning the world title in 2023, Smith has faced several physical problems that have had a major impact on his performances and his presence on the PDC circuit.

After his win in Switzerland, Smith addressed the crowd directly. He explained how special it felt to be back on stage.

"I just want to apologise first and foremost for taking too much time away because I've missed this, like straight away walking out I've missed it so I want to apologise and also make a promise that in 2027," said Smith on stage.

Michael Smith has now slipped to 36th in the world rankings

Plagued by physical problems for years

Smith has arthritis in his right hand and problems with his wrists, among other issues. The Englishman broke both wrists at the age of 19 and still feels the effects years later.

He also suffered a grade-two injury to the acromioclavicular joint in his shoulder. The injury required intensive physiotherapy. Problems with his foot and ankle also affected him.

Persistent symptoms have forced Smith to miss matches and tournaments regularly. His physical problems have also coincided with a sharp fall in the world rankings.

That has made the situation especially painful for a player who claimed the world title in early 2023 by beating Michael van Gerwen in the final.

"You will see me back"

Despite all the setbacks, Smith has no intention of winding down his career. During his on-stage interview at the Swiss Darts Trophy, he made clear his ambition to return to the circuit full-time next year.

"I will be playing 100% of the tournament, and you will see me back so you're an amazing crowd but that's my my promise for now."

The Englishman made clear that he wants to put his current situation behind him. He did not provide further details about what his schedule will look like. Smith ended by thanking the crowd for their support.
