Kolt Dieterich has shown promising growth for Washington football

With center Landen Hatchett out for the season, the Washington Huskies will have to shuffle their offensive line once again, which will include moving Kolt Dieterich back to center.

The Sam Houston State transfer started UW's first five games in the middle after having never played the position before in his football career. With Hatchett back in the mix, Dieterich moved into a timeshare at left guard with John Mills, who had split his reps between the position and left tackle, with freshman Kodi Greene as the Huskies seemed to finally find a combination up front that worked in a win at Purdue, rushing for a season-high 186 yards.

The experience at left guard also appeared to be greatly beneficial for Dieterich to watch Hatchett operate the huddle and communicate opposing fronts and protection adjustments to the offensive line.

"Seeing it throughout practice, hearing it throughout practice, the whole communication piece...the identification piece, seeing a guy who does it at a high level, I think, is a great teacher in terms of that's what it feels like, that's what it sounds like, and he's got a great example to continue that moving forward," offensive line coach Michael Switzer said on Tuesday.

Dieterich stated in the preseason that making calls was one of his biggest adjustments to the new position, but Switzer added that he's seen the fourth-year make significant growth in that area.

"The comfortability leading it at the line of scrimmage can be a lot when you haven't done it before," he said. "The communication piece of it has improved greatly, and his ability to ID and get us in the right calls, whether it's alerts or anything like that, I think has grown a lot in a short time, which is awesome."

"He's improved in that way; he's improved in his play. I think that's a guy you look at throughout the season who's gotten better every single game, whether that's playing really well at guard last week, now moving back to center, he's ready for the challenge, but he's progressed really nicely."
