A new report from a New York Yankees insider suggests that if fans are hoping the club can dangle Anthony Volpe and Spencer Jones in trade talks for a big addition this offseason, they’ll want to lower those expectations.
We have no idea how long the offseason will be before the 2027 MLB season, with a lockout expected to start on December 1. But when it does happen, the Yankees are expected to do all they can to improve the roster after being swept out of the playoffs this month.
Upgrading second, third, catcher, and center are expected to be the team’s top priorities this winter. They could address those spots in free agency, but a trade is just as strong a possibility. If the Yankees do shop on the trade market this winter, some fans believe they might be able to get a pretty good return if they offer Volpe or Jones in discussions.
It was a question that a Bronx Bombers supporter posed to the New York Post’s Joel Sherman this week. However, his response didn’t offer positive news about either player’s value on the trade market.
According to the MLB insider, the infielder’s “stock is probably lower than it’s ever been” after another underwhelming season from the one-time star prospect. He did admit that the 25-year-old does have “admirers” around the league who believe he could improve if taken out of New York. But his inconsistency and the expectation that he will get a pay bump in arbitration this offseason are doing nothing good for his trade value.
When it comes to Jones, Sherman claims there are talent evaluators who see 40 home run potential and good corner outfield defense. However, there is also a real possibility he is out of the league in a few years because of his high strikeout rate. This means rival teams aren’t giving up premium talent for the prospect.
Essentially, the MLB insider is saying neither will get the Yankees the big-time return fans are hoping for. So they are better off holding on to them and seeing if they can improve their stats and value in 2027. Then maybe use them as trade chips before a future trade deadline or next offseason.
