Former NFL MVP Kurt Warner Draws 1-Word Line In The Sand as Fan Pitches Bolder Apology for Steelers-Saints Broadcast Blunder

Former NFL MVP Kurt Warner had an eventful Sunday morning calling the Pittsburgh Steelers’ 16-10 win over the New Orleans Saints at Stade de France for NFL Network with Dave Pasch and Jason Kelce.

During the broadcast, he mixed up Steelers running back Jaylen Warren with Indianapolis Colts tight end Tyler Warren. He also brought up Santonio Holmes’ winning catch from Super Bowl XLIII and said on the air, “I hate those Terrible Towels.”

After the game, Warner apologized for one of those moments and explained another. That wasn’t enough; one fan suggested that instead of an apology, he should trade his colors for Pittsburgh black and gold.

Kurt Warner Ends a Long Day of Explaining, Apologizing After Steelers-Saints Broadcast

Kurt slipped up on Jaylen Warren’s name on a big day for the Steelers running back, who ran 18 times for 101 yards and caught three passes for 36 more. Through Week 7, his 5.5 yards per carry ranks second among qualified rushers and ranked sixth in PFN’s NFL RB Impact Score with an 82.4 grade through six weeks.

Warner spent Sunday explaining that his comments about the Steelers were all in good fun, despite revisiting the painful Super Bowl 43 loss during the NFL Network broadcast.

The former Arizona Cardinals quarterback even admitted that he may have sounded salty while discussing Holmes’ infamous winning catch. But then one fan suggested there was only one way for Warner to prove he had no hard feelings toward Pittsburgh.

Responding to Warner’s tweet about not sounding salty, a fan joked, “Only way to prove it is to don a Steelers jersey 🤷‍♂️ it’s rules 😅😅”

The former NFL MVP needed only a single word and left no room for any debate. “NEVER!!!!” he replied.

His earlier tweets needed more than one word, though. Addressing the name slip, Warner said, “Yes, I called JAYLEN Warren ‘Tyler’ today after calling Colts game & referencing him in today’s game… My bad, so sorry… unfortunately it won’t be my last time bc sometimes u just react & misspeak!”

He also made a point of praising the player he’d misnamed, writing that “JAYLEN was awesome today, so hopefully I gave him enough LOVE at other times.”

In another moment, he hit at Pittsburgh tradition. Broadcaster Myron Cope had introduced the Terrible Towel in 1975, asking fans to bring yellow towels to a playoff game against the Baltimore Colts.

“I hate those Terrible Towels,” Warner remarked, according to Pittsburgh radio host Andrew Fillipponi.

The reason the Super Bowl 43 loss possibly stings Warner is because he had come agonizingly close to securing his second title. He had already won one with the St. Louis Rams.

James Harrison intercepted Warner near the goal line and returned it 100 yards for a touchdown to end the first half. Warner’s Cardinals still took a 23-20 lead on a 64-yard Larry Fitzgerald touchdown with a couple of minutes left. Then Ben Roethlisberger hit Holmes for a 6-yard score with 35 seconds remaining.

The catch was upheld on review, and the 27-23 win gave Pittsburgh its sixth Super Bowl title. Warner finished 31-of-43 for 377 yards and three touchdowns. Holmes was named MVP with nine catches for 131 yards.

When he was called out for sounding bitter, Warner pushed back after the game: “People, I’m just having a little fun at my Super Bowl loss to the Steelers, relax, please! I’m not bitter, I know SA had his feet down & they should have won… but like anyone, I don’t take myself too seriously & can still have fun with it all.”

“It’s how normal life works – back and forth between rivals or after an important game… no need to CUSS me out for fun comments!”

The Steelers moved to 5-2 with the win and sit second in the AFC North. They return to Acrisure Stadium to host the Cleveland Browns on Nov. 1.
