Keith Andrews suggested Jeremy Jacquet had been “cute” in the incident that saw Brentford reduced to 10 men in their Premier League defeat to Liverpool.

The Bees were ahead through a Keane Lewis-Potter header when defender Yehor Yarmoliuk was dismissed in first-half additional time after being adjudged to have made a head-butting motion towards Jacquet.

With a player advantage, Liverpool turned the game on its head in the second half with goals from Victor Munoz and Alexander Isak to secure a 2-1 win at the Gtech Community Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

But Andrews wasn’t overly impressed by the decision of referee John Brooks to red-card Yarmoliuk after a check on his pitchside monitor.

OPINION

“We need to look at ourselves first, which we always do,” said the Brentford boss. “We don’t really look at what part they play in the incident.

“I do think they were cute and clever but Yehor needs to do better. Look at where Jacquet is walking, he isn’t walking to the ball, he is walking into Yehor.”

Of Yarmoliuk, Andrews added: “He is clearly disappointed. He is an amazing young man and you need to remember he is very young and someone we love working with and he will learn from it.”

The Bees ended the game with nine men after captain Vitaly Janelt received a second yellow card and subsequent red for fouling Reds substitute Rio Ngumoha during additional time at the end of the match.

“I’ve seen both of Vitaly’s yellows back,” said Andrews. “Overall I like our players playing with emotion and I like us to play on the edge and when you do that and you think some decisions aren’t fair, that can be very difficult for our players. They become frustrated, our players aren’t robots.

“The second (booking) he showed honesty to get back and make a challenge and most midfielders wouldn’t have been able to get back in. So could there have been more commonsense? I think so.”

Of the defeat, which was Brentford’s first this season, Andrews added: “A lot went down in the game, obviously. I think we were edging it, we were getting into a good rhythm and started to play with a little bit more belief and speed and got ourselves in front.

“We played against a very good side with pretty special individuals in it. I felt confident coming into the game.

“But obviously the sending-off changes the dynamic of the game and it is more of a challenge and gives them an advantage.”
