Tottenham Hotspur invested significantly during the recent summer window to rebuild the core of the team. The club bosses backed Roberto De Zerbi to the hilt by bringing in 10 players.
However, Spurs have been winless in the Premier League so far this season, picking up just three points from six games. De Zerbi’s intricate positional system requires time, repetition, and tactical familiarity, qualities that are difficult for the new players to adapt to rapidly. However, patience is something that’s wearing thin, with De Zerbi watching his players miss several chances to put Manchester United to the sword last weekend.
Despite the arrivals of attackers Savio, Omar Marmoush and Mykhailo Mudryk, the Lilywhites have set their sights on a winger currently plying his trade in the Portuguese top flight.
According to a report from Hooligan Soccer, Tottenham are among several Premier League clubs monitoring Sporting CP winger Geny Catamo.
Geny Catamo has attracted significant interest from top clubs across Europe following his eye-catching displays for Sporting CP. He has started the new season brilliantly, bagging a goal and four assists in eight league appearances.
Sunderland, Nottingham Forest, Brentford and Brighton are also monitoring his situation. Serie A duo AC Milan and Como have remained interested. However, the report adds that Catamo has a €60 million release clause in his contract that runs until June 2029. Sporting CP are reluctant to lose a key asset mid-season, so interested clubs will need to make significant offers to convince the Portuguese giants to come to the negotiating table.

Any prospective suitor hoping to snatch Catamo away from the Jose Alvalade Stadium will face an extraordinarily difficult negotiation process. Sporting hierarchy members view the winger as an integral part of their long-term sporting project, not a short-term asset for quick resale. To safeguard their investment and ward off interest, the Portuguese club have inserted a €60million buyout clause.
That said, should Tottenham trigger Catamo’s release clause? The Mozambique international is a left-footed right-winger with strong dribbling skills, dynamism, directness and pace to burn. He is creative, a good crosser of the ball, tenacious and can score goals.
However, Spurs paid a premium to sign Savio from Man City in the summer. De Zerbi also has a creative left-footed right-winger in Mohammed Kudus in his ranks, while Dejan Kulusevski can also operate out wide. So, the Spurs boss has three options that are similar to Catamo’s profile, and unless one of them leaves, there is no point spending a big fee to sign the Sporting star.
Instead, the Lilywhites must focus on signing a new No.9 in the winter transfer window.
