The first half was thrilling, end-to-end stuff and the only surprise was that neither side found the net.

Elgin had the first clear opening from a big Tom Ritchie clearance that released Kane Hester and he beat two men but not keeper Shea Dowie with an attempted chip.

A minute later, Matty Grant and Mark Gallagher set up Jack MacIver who switched the ball to his left foot and curled a great effort off the underside of the bar before Edinburgh cleared.

Edinburgh danger man Innes Lawson jinked into space and fired across the home goal as a warning sign for the home team.

An incredible miss on 23 minutes kep the scoresheet blank.

Elgin captain Russell Dingwall chipped a ball to the back post and Hester hit the post at full stretch leaving Gallagher with a gaping target but his effort seemed to take a deflection and whizz wide of goal.

At the other end, Lennon Walker’s touch let him down in the six-yard box after Lawson teed him up.

Gallagher then blasted over for Elgin and hester nodded wide at full stretch from a Dingwall flick.

It took a brilliant Ritchie save at full stretch to keep out Murray Aiken’s curling effort on 35 minutes.

Edinburgh had their tails up at this stage and Jack Leitch fired just over, before Ritchie pulled off another fine stop to repel Walker’s rising drive inside the box on the stroke of half time.

The second half was scrappier, with far fewer chances.

Gallagher forced a save out of keeper Shea Dowie from 25 yards, and the Edinburgh number one also got a hand to Kyle Girvan’s low blast with 20 minutes left.

Edinburgh sub Euan Glasgow did well to turn a driven Gallagher cross over his own bar as Elgin pressed hard.

Sub Oli Colloty then took a poor touch in front of goal and earned a yel;low card when he slid into the keeper.

In the closing minutes, the visitors hit back with Lawson firing over after a good run and Tommy North blasting the final chance over as neither side could make a breakthrough.
