Jim Harbaugh's NFL struggles have cast doubt over a potential college football return, with the former Michigan coach facing a virtually impossible path back to the NCAA

Pressure is mounting on Chargers head coach Jim Harbaugh

Jim Harbaugh could find it virtually impossible to return to college football as his struggles in the NFL continue to raise questions over his future.

The Los Angeles Chargers have endured a difficult start to the 2026 NFL season, with quarterback Justin Herbert struggling to find consistency. Across five games, all of which ended in defeat, he has thrown for 938 yards, recorded five total touchdowns, seven interceptions and six fumbles. His passer rating is the lowest in the NFL, while he has completed just 59.4 percent of his passes.

Los Angeles' 0-5 start is its worst since 2017, increasing the pressure on Harbaugh and offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel as the Chargers struggle to get their season back on track.

Nightmare Start

The Los Angeles Chargers’ struggles continued in Week 5 of the 2026 NFL season as they fell to a 23-17 defeat against the Denver Broncos, extending their winless start to 0-5, their worst start since 2017. Jim Harbaugh cut a dejected figure after the loss, with the Chargers still searching for answers as their difficult start to the campaign continues. If Harbaugh is considering a return to the college ranks, where he won a national championship at Michigan, he'll find it virtually impossible.

Offensive Struggles

Harbaugh, meanwhile, has backed new offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel to remain on his staff as they look to navigate the team’s difficult start together. The Chargers are averaging just 14.7 points per game and rank last in the NFL in EPA per play at -0.22 under McDaniel. The offensive coordinator was fired by the Miami Dolphins after four seasons, during which he posted a 35-33 record and went 0-2 in the playoffs.

Pressure Mounts

Harbaugh made the bold move to the NFL after leading Michigan to the national championship in 2024. However, a disastrous start to his second season with the Chargers has quickly put his credentials under the spotlight, with the coach facing mounting pressure as his team struggles to deliver on expectations.

NCAA Barrier

Jim Harbaugh has been linked with the head coach job at the Los Angeles Chargers
If Harbaugh is hoping for a return to college football, however, the path back could prove extremely difficult. He is subject to a show-cause order that runs until 2038, which would impose significant restrictions on any college program that hires him. Harbaugh would also face a mandatory one-year suspension if he takes another job in NCAA athletics.
