Yashasvi Jaiswal endured another disappointing outing in red-ball cricket as his struggles continued during the second unofficial Test between New Zealand A and India A at Hagley Oval in Christchurch. The left-handed opener failed to open his account on Day 1, departing for a four-ball duck in a dismissal that once again raised questions about his technique against quality swing bowling.

Fraser Sheat exposes Yashasvi Jaiswal’s technical flaw with perfect inswinger

Jaiswal walked out to bat with the responsibility of providing India A with a solid start. However, New Zealand seamer Fraser Sheat had other plans as he produced a superb delivery to send the Indian opener back to the pavilion. Sheat pitched the ball on a good length before generating noticeable inward movement. Jaiswal attempted to play the delivery towards the off-side but failed to get his bat in line with the ball. His movement appeared slightly delayed, allowing the delivery to beat his defensive stroke and strike him directly in front of the stumps.

The appeal from the New Zealand A players was convincing, and the umpire had little hesitation in raising his finger. Jaiswal’s brief stay lasted just four deliveries, leaving India A with an early setback. The dismissal highlighted the difficulty he has been experiencing while dealing with deliveries that move back into him. His inability to bring the bat down in time left a significant gap between bat and pad, giving Sheat the opportunity to exploit his vulnerability.

Four ducks raise concerns over Jaiswal’s red-ball form

The latest failure adds to Jaiswal’s growing list of disappointing performances in recent red-ball appearances. The talented opener has registered four ducks in his recent stretch of innings, a worrying development considering the consistency he demonstrated earlier in his career.

Previously, questions had been raised about his tendency to chase deliveries outside the off-stump, particularly when attempting aggressive shots. However, his dismissal against Sheat highlighted another area that requires attention.

Against quality swing bowling, Jaiswal appeared to commit to his movement before properly adjusting to the trajectory of the delivery. Such a delay can prove costly, especially in overseas conditions where fast bowlers regularly extract movement with the new ball.

Jaiswal’s recent struggles have arrived at a time when expectations surrounding his red-ball career remain exceptionally high. Having established himself as one of India’s most promising batting talents, the youngster is expected to play an important role in the team’s future Test plans. However, facing quality seam bowling in challenging conditions remains an important test of his ability as an opening batter. His latest dismissal serves as another reminder that technical adjustments may be necessary to overcome the challenges posed by moving deliveries.
