The second Test between South Africa and Australia at St George's Park in Gqeberha has been shaped by challenging weather and pitch conditions over its opening days. Australia won the toss and inserted the Proteas, who are seeking to recover after suffering a 214-run defeat in the series opener at Durban. Heavy rain dominated the first two days, restricting play to just 43 overs across both days, with only 12.2 overs bowled on the opening day. Former South African opener Alviro Petersen shared his thoughts on how the hosts need to handle the third day.

The pitch has been prepared with significant grass coverage by curator Adrian Carter, and moisture has remained trapped beneath the surface despite the covers being in place for most of the first two days. This combination has created ideal conditions for seam bowlers, with Scott Boland already making an impact by claiming 4/31 and reducing the Proteas to 97/5. Boland dismissed opener Aiden Markram for 11 off 28 balls and removed David Bedingham caught by wicketkeeper Alex Carey.

"I think it's going to be tough because, obviously, every time you come here, there's moisture in the surface. It's almost like the grass stands up. And that's what the bowlers want, someone like Scott Boland, who can be compared to Vernon Philander. They want something where they can pitch the ball, get the seam to scramble a bit and go both ways. So I think it's going to be tough," said Petersen to IOL.

The mental challenge facing Proteas batters

Petersen believes the challenge facing the Proteas is as much about mental approach as technical skill. Temba Bavuma has already shown what can be achieved through mental fortitude at the crease, and Petersen feels more of that will be required from the middle and lower order if the Proteas are to post a competitive first-innings total. The adaptation required is more mental than physical, according to the former opener's assessment.

"What I've seen in recent seasons is that the guys are actually reaching for it, whereas you have to go in and play the ball late. But it's difficult. It takes a while for you to really get used to the tempo and all of that, and when you feel like you can do so early on, it's going to be a real struggle," said Petersen.

"If you look at the two teams, Australia and South Africa, South Africa will have two choices... Now the question is, how are you going to play? Are you going to try and make something happen? It's hard to say," he added.

Clear, warm weather around 24 degrees Celsius was expected throughout Tuesday, October 20, marking the first appearance of sunshine since the match began. Play was scheduled to commence at 10am, offering a full day's cricket after the rain-affected opening two days. The improved weather conditions provided some relief, but Petersen's assessment suggested the pitch conditions would continue to present significant difficulties for the South African batting lineup.
