Man United Track £40m Centre-Back: Should They Risk Madrid’s Buy-Back?

Man United transfer news: Manchester United’s defensive problems have become harder to ignore. Michael Carrick’s side sit 16th in the Premier League with seven points from eight matches. October brought a 4-1 Champions League defeat to Como, followed by Bournemouth’s 3-0 victory at Old Trafford. Both results exposed a back line struggling to protect the space behind an aggressive press.

Matthijs de Ligt and Lisandro Martínez have yet to establish a reliable partnership, while Leny Yoro has only recently returned. Harry Maguire remains available, but his contract expires in June 2027. With United needing better defensive stability, recruitment must address both their immediate problems and their long-term plans rather than simply add another squad player.

Tuttomercatoweb, via Transfer Feed, reports growing Premier League interest in Como defender Jacobo Ramón, including from United.

Man United transfer news: Why Ramón has caught United’s attention

The 21-year-old Spaniard is 1.96 metres tall and has scored twice in Serie A this season, alongside his Champions League goal against United. His reported 92% passing accuracy, aerial strength and recovery speed make him an intriguing option for a side that must defend large spaces while building attacks from the back. Under Cesc Fàbregas, Ramón has developed into a regular starter at Como.

Should United pursue Ramón despite Real Madrid’s control?

Ramón joined Como from Real Madrid in 2025 for an initial fee of around £2.1m. Madrid retained a 50% sell-on clause and buy-back options, creating a significant obstacle for interested clubs. Reports place his current valuation between £39m and £43m, although Como have not agreed a sale.

For United, the attraction goes beyond his physical profile. Ramón could eventually partner Yoro, giving the defence two young centre-backs with the pace to cover space and the ability to progress possession. However, United must establish exactly how Madrid’s clauses would affect negotiations before committing a substantial fee.

Paying more than £40m for a developing defender carries risk, especially when United need immediate defensive improvement. Yet signing another short-term solution would do little to address their recurring problems. Ramón offers a credible long-term option, provided he wants regular football at Old Trafford and Como can negotiate a deal that respects Madrid’s contractual rights.

United should pursue him only if they can secure genuine control over his future; otherwise, they risk investing heavily in a player Madrid could reclaim at a fraction of his market value.
