Tottenham break unexpected Premier League record in win over Crystal Palace
Tottenham break unexpected Premier League record in win over Crystal Palace

Tottenham set a new Premier League record for the most corners taken by a single team during their 2-0 victory over 10-man Crystal Palace.

Roberto De Zerbi's side made it three Premier League wins in a row on Saturday as goals from Archie Gray and Jan Paul van Hecke sealed all three points against an out-of-form Palace.

Both of their goals actually came from corners. Gray opened the scoring with a header from Mohammed Kudus' corner before Jan Paul van Hecke doubled Tottenham's advantage.

With 73 minutes on the clock, Van Hecke nodded home the rebound after his initial effort was tipped onto the crossbar by Dean Henderson.

It was a dominant display from the home side. According to Sofascore, Spurs registered 34 shots throughout the game, while their tally of 20 corners set a new Premier League record.

Ahead of Saturday's clash in North London, the highest number of corners recorded by one team in a single Premier League match was 19.

Manchester United recorded 19 corners in a 0-0 draw against Burnley on October 29, 2016, and exactly six years later, Tottenham matched that feat in a 3-2 win over Bournemouth.

But on Saturday, the Lilywhites surpassed that number as they dominated from set pieces.

Before the Palace game, Tottenham had averaged 6.5 corners per Premier League match across the 2026-27 season, which is the highest average of any team in the division, but taking 20 was certainly unexpected.

Tottenham form suggests team bonding trip may have worked wonders

Roberto De Zerbi's decision to head to Marbella following their Premier League clash against Manchester United was mocked by some, but it appears to have helped matters on the pitch.

The Italian scheduled a team bonding trip in a bid to kick-start their campaign and provide a chance for their new-look squad to bond.

The likes of Savio, Mykhailo Mudryk, Omar Marmoush and Tosin Adarabioyo, who all joined in the summer window, bonded with their new teammates in southern Spain, and they've since won three on the trot.

“I think when you are a coach, you have to solve the problems and you have to take the decisions, you have to take the responsibilities," De Zerbi said on the trip.

“In that moment, I thought the best way to solve our problems is to be together, to stay close, to spend time together, not on the pitch, because on the pitch it is important when there is already a big group, a big relationship, a big union between the players."

He added: "The focus went to the group, to find the best way to stay together and to improve the relationships.”
