Niels Zonneveld has claimed the first European Tour title of his career after completing a remarkable comeback to defeat Danny Noppert 8-5 in an all-Dutch final at the 2026 Dutch Darts Championship in Maastricht.
Appearing in his first European Tour final, Zonneveld recovered from 2-0 down to win five consecutive legs before producing a spectacular 157 checkout and surviving a nervy finish to secure the biggest victory of his career. The left-hander averaged 92.93 against Noppert's 87.66, becoming the first Dutch player to win the tournament and bringing the 2026 European Tour season to a memorable conclusion in front of his home crowd.
The breakthrough earned Zonneveld the £35,000 top prize and secured his first-ever qualification for the Grand Slam of Darts in Wolverhampton. His triumph came at the expense of Noppert, who suffered a fifth European Tour final defeat after earlier ending Gian van Veen's hopes of turning his record-breaking weekend into a title.
Noppert's wait for a first Euro Tour title goes on with this his 5th final defeat on the circuit
Noppert had been the standout performer of the quarter-finals, averaging a superb 113.42 in a commanding 6-2 victory over Luke Woodhouse. He carried that momentum into his semi-final against Gian van Veen, whose historic 120.24 average on Saturday had made him the centre of attention in Maastricht.
Noppert opened up a 5-2 lead before Van Veen threatened a comeback, winning three consecutive legs to level at 5-5. But the Dutch number two responded with a 13-darter and eventually sealed a 7-5 victory on double 12, ending Van Veen's hopes of turning his record-breaking weekend into a title.
Zonneveld's passage was considerably more dramatic. Trailing Wessel Nijman 5-3 in their quarter-final, he produced successive finishes of 71 on the bullseye and 128 to force a deciding leg. Both players missed match darts before Zonneveld eventually prevailed 6-5.
He then overcame Stephen Bunting 7-4 in the semi-finals, producing important checkouts of 104 and 106 as he secured his first career victory over 'The Bullet' and reached his maiden European Tour final.
Noppert made the stronger start to the final, holding throw in the opening leg despite missing two darts at double 20. Zonneveld had opportunities to punish those misses but failed to take them, allowing 'The Freeze' to return and move ahead.
Noppert doubled his advantage with a 56 checkout on double 10, leaving Zonneveld needing to respond after falling 2-0 behind in the biggest match of his career.
The left-hander did so with a 125 set-up shot to leave tops, which he pinned on his return to register his first leg. A clinical combination of treble 15 and double 14 then brought him level at 2-2.
A superb 165 set-up shot left Zonneveld on 24 in the fifth leg, and when Noppert missed two darts at tops, he returned to pin double 12 with his final dart and secure the first break of throw.
Zonneveld backed that up with another hold on tops before opening the seventh leg against the darts with a 180. A 59 checkout on double 20 followed as he moved 5-2 ahead, having won five consecutive legs to turn the final around completely.
Noppert finally stopped the run with an outstanding 89 checkout on the bullseye, keeping himself in contention after watching his early advantage disappear.
The former UK Open champion then closed the gap further. Zonneveld missed the bullseye for a 161 checkout, only for Noppert to do likewise from 90. When Zonneveld subsequently made a mess of the remaining 25, Noppert stepped in to reduce his deficit to 5-4.
Zonneveld responded with arguably the finest moment of the final, producing a magnificent 157 checkout on double 20 to restore his two-leg advantage and move within two legs of the title.
A third 180 of the contest helped Zonneveld pile pressure on Noppert's throw in the following leg. He took his opportunity on double 10 to break again and move 7-4 ahead, leaving himself just one leg away from a maiden European Tour crown.
Noppert refused to surrender. Despite missing two darts at double 20 to stay alive, he was handed another opportunity when Zonneveld lost his way on the big numbers and managed only one championship dart rather than two, narrowly missing double 12.
Noppert returned to find tops, keeping the final alive at 7-5 and forcing Zonneveld to confront the finishing line once more.
Zonneveld fired in a 180 to leave 81, before finding treble 19 with his first dart to leave 24. His next dart slipped into double 9 rather than the intended double 12, leaving an awkward double 3 with his final dart in hand.
This time there was no mistake. Zonneveld pinned double 3 to complete an 8-5 victory, sparking celebrations in Maastricht as he became a European Tour champion for the first time.
The final dart also booked his ticket to Wolverhampton for a maiden Grand Slam of Darts appearance, adding another major milestone to a weekend in which Zonneveld had arrived chasing his first European Tour final and departed with the last title of the 2026 season.
