Matthias Jaissle has reportedly held crunch talks with Newcastle’s CEO and squad following a difficult start to the season. The Magpies suffered their second straight defeat after succumbing 1-0 at home to Aston Villa on Saturday, leading to a chorus of boos from the home fans. That result came just five days after a humiliating 4-1 loss away to newly-promoted Coventry City. Newcastle have now lost three of their last four games, leading to concerns over Jaissle’s preferred ‘vertical football’ tactics. Talk of him becoming the first sacked Premier League manager has ramped up, but everyone at the club remains behind him with no plan to swing the axe just yet. And the former Al-Ahli coach is not resting on his laurels as he seeks counsel from players and boardroom members alike over the club’s direction.

The i Paper state Jaissle sought feedback from senior members of his squad regarding the style of football and their roles in it. It’s reported the answer was that his players are 100 per cent committed to that approach, which centres around playing four in defence, a high-intensity press and getting the ball upfield as quickly and efficiently as possible.

Jaissle’s other important meeting was with Newcastle chief executive officer David Hopkinson, which took place promptly after the defeat to Villa. The manager was also back at the training ground early on Monday morning as he looked to assess the wreckage of a terrible week on the pitch.

The squad wasn’t present given players had been afforded the day off despite their second straight loss, their first at St James’ Park under Jaissle. Sunday’s upcoming fixture at Crystal Palace suddenly has a more definitive feel to it, with a third straight loss to another side struggling for results only likely to further the message that the current methods aren’t working.

Jaissle, 38, is an ardent defender of his vertical football tactics, even though he has likened them more to a mindset, as opposed to a specific strategy. It worked like a charm at first following his arrival in the north-east, with the team going undefeated in his opening five games.

Entertainment has been a common theme throughout his tenure, at least from a neutral’s perspective. Newcastle scored at least two goals per game in each of his first four outings in charge but that high-risk, high-reward model has started to show its drawbacks.

The Magpies have kept just two clean sheets from their nine matches under Jaissle. One of those came in the EFL Cup against Millwall, while the other materialised in a 2-0 win over a Tottenham team that’s largely failed to impress this season.

Jaissle warned over the summer that this season would be one of transition and would therefore come with potential patches of inconsistency. As well as the departure of Eddie Howe, the club also witnessed a widespread makeover of the squad after several major departures and new signings.

That same squad remains loyal to the vision Jaissle has mapped out, banking on the notion it will deliver more consistent results over time. Sadly for the manager, however, patience is the one commodity often found most lacking when it comes to a Premier League coaching career.
