Ivan Toney has always been known for his interesting penalty techniques.
Even during his time in the lower football leagues, he adopted his slow and composed run-up to the ball before a side-footed strike towards goal, almost always managing to beat the keeper even if they had dived the correct way.
The technique gained major attention in the spotlight after his spot kick with England at the Euros in 2024, helping the Three Lions progress in the tournament to the next round.
He scored 23 penalties for Brentford during his time at the Bees, becoming a key player during their promotion to the Premier League. He opted to leave England for Saudi Arabia in 2024, signing a contract with Al-Ahli, where his latest penalty has gone viral.
Toney's usual technique involves practically taking a five-step walk to the ball before calmly side-footing his strike into a corner, leaving the keeper unable to react and make a save.
Whilst his latest penalty has taken a different approach, it proved to be effective for a very similar reason.
Who got more assists?
Round 1 of 9
The striker, who is considered one of the best penalty takers in world football, placed the ball on the spot, whilst taking three steps backwards to prepare. The referee had already blown his whistle once the ball had been placed on the spot. Toney took a couple of steps backwards before abruptly stopping and quickly running towards the ball and smashing it past the keeper into the top corner.
It gave his Al-Ahli side a fourth goal of the afternoon in the 95th minute, sealing a 4-1 win over Al Khaleej. Goalkeeper Marwan Al Haidari was unable to react before the ball hit the back of the net, proving the latest technique used by Toney to be effective. He even caught the cameraman off guard.
Toney has started his Saudi Pro League season in top form, dominating the golden boot race. The 30-year-old has played nine times, scoring 13 goals, whilst providing two assists.
He joined Al-Ahli in the summer of 2024, and has featured 106 times for the club, and he has dominated in Saudi Arabia since he joined, scoring 85 goals.
His penalty was his second goal of the game, after scoring in the 11th minute, whilst also providing an assist for Portuguese and former Sporting winger, Trincao.
His fine form in the 2025-26 season, where he scored 32 league goals, earned him a call-up to Thomas Tuchel's England squad for the World Cup, where he picked up a bronze medal as his country finished third.
He told ITV Sport that his "numbers speak for themselves", as he brushed off comments that playing in Saudi Arabia would hurt his chances of playing for his country.
