The boxing champ is the subject of the new Netflix docuseries ‘TYSON’
Former heavyweight boxing champion Mike Tyson earned a lot of prize money over his career, with total earnings estimated at around $400 million.
However, between extravagant spending habits, allegedly getting ripped off by former managers and two pricey divorces from Robin Givens and Monica Turner, by 2003, Tyson had lost it all. He filed for bankruptcy that year, claiming he was $23 million in debt.
But at one point, when the money was flowing freely, Tyson had a fleet of over 25 luxury cars, including five Bentley Azures, three white Bengal tigers (plus a tiger trainer and pen), mansions and a love for a good diamond-encrusted watch.
In the new documentary TYSON (out now on Netflix), the 60-year-old boxing legend opens up about having a good time with his earnings, including private planes, plenty of expensive booze and cocaine.
“The past is the past,” Tyson, who is now celebrating 10 years free from alcohol and cocaine, tells PEOPLE of revisiting his history for the series. “I just don’t understand why they still want to know about me!” he adds.
“They’ve done so many documentaries about me already! But I guess I understand. This one is good. But a lot of things are just so uncomfortable to revisit,” he said.

Even as Tyson has rebuilt his wealth through business ventures, entertainment projects (such as the upcoming Mike Tyson Invitational 3 amateur boxing tournament), sponsorships and appearances, he says some old spending habits die hard.
“You know what I still put a lot of money on?” he says with a laugh. “Fragrance. If you’ve ever heard of AMAFFI, that’s what I use.”
According to the Swiss luxury perfume house, fragrances can take up to two years to craft and come in bottles that incorporate crystal, gold- and silver-plated details and intricate decorations. The fragrances currently available on the website range from $2,000 to $6,000
“I have a bunch of bottles, probably worth about $50,000 total,” Tyson says.
Expensive cologne aside, Tyson says his main focus is being a father and looking ahead.
“Everything that was quote-unquote ‘negative,’ turned out to be a positive for me,” Tyson says of his wild past.
“I’m very grateful for it all because it made me a better person. Everything bad that happened to me, I’m grateful for.”
