Rangers fans have had their say via TalkingPoints on Dujon Sterling’s future at Ibrox as his contract expires at the end of the season.
The 26-year-old has become a first-team regular under Derek McInnes, despite the summer arrivals of two new right-backs in Ross McCrorie and Kosta Nedeljkovic.
Sterling did have a minor injury scare, but apart from that, he has been available and has been performing exceptionally in defence for the Light Blues.
The defender is one of the best in Scotland…
If the English defender keeps performing as he has for the rest of the season and remains injury-free, there are likely to be a host of clubs keen on securing his services. As things stand, he would be able to leave on a free transfer come the end of the season, with his contract expiring.
That is why the fans want him to first be handed a new deal, and then they believe that the club could demand around £20m for his services. This would be a huge deal if the Gers can pull it off and would see the club make a £20m pure profit on Sterling as he joined on a free transfer.
However, not everyone thinks that he would be able to command that kind of money. At £20m, Sterling would become the most expensive sale in Rangers‘ history.
The current record is held by Calvin Bassey, who left Ibrox for Ajax for a £19.6m fee in 2022. The Gers wanted more than that for Nicolas Raskin in the summer, but as no club were willing to pay that amount, he ended up staying put in Glasgow.
George Heriott, a lifelong Rangers fan, believes that Sterling has been the most-improved player at the club. In his view, the club should not sell him for less than what he’s worth, as they have done with other players in the past.
Back when Ryan Kent and Alfredo Morelos were at the peak of their powers, the Gers could have demanded big money for the duo. However, unfortunately, both of them left on free transfers, and waned considerably towards the end of their Ibrox careers.
As things stand, Rangers News understands that there is no credible interest from the Premier League in Sterling’s services, but that could change as we head closer to the January transfer window.
In the winter, he’ll have only six months left on his deal if there isn’t a new contract, and that could see him leaving on the cheap.
