Carrie Jones receives Cymru 50-cap award with family

The footballer from Mochdre, near Newtown, was presented with the commemorative cap ahead of Cymru's 3-0 victory over Albania on October 13, although she actually reached the milestone during the 3-1 World Cup qualifying win over Czechia in June.

After receiving the honour, Jones shared a photograph with her loved ones and wrote: “Feeling incredibly grateful that I got to share this moment with my loved ones yesterday. 50 caps just in time for little one’s arrival.”

Among those celebrating with her were father Andrew, mother Joyce, sister Maia and cousin Rhys.

From Latham Park to the international stage

Jones' journey to becoming one of Cymru's key players began in Newtown, where she developed through the academy system at Latham Park.

Her talent was evident from a young age and she made her senior Cymru debut at just 15 years old, only a month after attending an under-15s national team camp.

A history-maker for Cymru

The midfielder has already played a role in some of the biggest moments in Welsh women's football history.

In 2022, she scored her first senior international goal in a World Cup qualifier against Greece, helping Cymru move closer to a play-off place.

Two years later she etched her name into Welsh football folklore when she came off the bench to score Cymru's second goal in the historic play-off victory over the Republic of Ireland that secured qualification for Euro 2025, the nation's first-ever major women's tournament.

More milestones to come

Jones reached her 50th appearance during Cymru's crucial victory over Czechia in June, a result which secured top spot in their World Cup qualifying group.

The cap presentation came four months later as Cymru continued another exciting qualification campaign, defeating Albania 3-0 to progress to the next stage of the 2027 Women's World Cup play-offs.

Still only 23, Jones already has half a century of international appearances to her name and remains one of the brightest products of Newtown's football pathway.

With Cymru now preparing to face Norway in the next round of qualification, the midfielder's story is still being written.
