The ongoing Test series between South Africa and Australia has produced plenty of entertaining moments alongside the intense cricketing action. However, an unusual incident involving a spectator grabbed attention during Day 3 of the series-deciding third Test at Newlands in Cape Town. A fan holding a cheeky message directed at Proteas wicketkeeper-batter Ryan Rickelton became an unexpected talking point, with the South African’s reaction making the moment even more amusing.
The incident took place during Australia’s first innings when the television cameras focused on a spectator in the stands. His placard carried a rather unusual question for the 30-year-old cricketer, prompting an entertaining exchange that quickly found its way onto social media.
The moment unfolded during Gerald Coetzee‘s over, with Australia’s Cooper Connolly batting alongside Mitchell Starc. As the broadcasters scanned the crowd at Newlands, one particular spectator stood out with a banner that read: “Ryan Rickelton, is your mom single?”
The cheeky message immediately caught viewers’ attention. The fan appeared delighted after being shown on the stadium’s giant screen and even blew a flying kiss while displaying his placard. Rickelton, however, initially had no idea what was happening in the stands. His teammates subsequently alerted him to the message by asking him to look towards the big screen.
Once the South African wicketkeeper-batter realised what the spectator had written, he responded with a noticeable shake of his head and a wry smile. His reaction added another layer of humour to the episode.
"Not sure he's putting his best foot forward." 🤣
Crazy things are happening on the grass banks at Newlands 😆

While the off-field moment brought some light-hearted entertainment, Rickelton has endured a relatively quiet series with the bat against Australia. He started the opening Test in Durban as a specialist opening batter but struggled to make an impact, recording scores of 0 and 2. Following those performances, South Africa moved him down the batting order.
The wicketkeeper-batter featured only once with the bat in the second Test at Gqeberha, scoring 31 runs as the Proteas secured an innings victory to level the series.
In the ongoing third Test, Rickelton contributed 42 runs from 83 deliveries during South Africa’s first innings. The hosts eventually managed 329 after Australia captain Pat Cummins opted to field first. Despite his modest returns throughout the series, Rickelton has continued to shoulder wicketkeeping responsibilities for the Proteas.
Away from the amusing incident in the stands, Australia enjoyed a productive third day and put themselves in a commanding position in the series decider. The visitors finished their first innings on 429, securing a valuable 100-run advantage. Josh Inglis led the charge with an excellent 102, while Alex Carey contributed 80. Simon Harmer was South Africa’s standout bowler, claiming four wickets for 104 runs.
South Africa struggled initially in their second innings after losing Aiden Markram and David Bedingham cheaply. However, Marques Ackerman’s determined 62 and Temba Bavuma‘s patient 35 helped the hosts recover. Nathan Lyon provided Australia with an important breakthrough late in the day by clean-bowling Bavuma shortly before stumps.
South Africa ended Day 3 at 140/4, holding a narrow 40-run lead. Rickelton remained unbeaten on eight alongside Matthew Breetzke, who was batting on 19.
