Shelton Henderson leads No. 14 Miami to 83-57 win over Wagner

Shelton Henderson scored 19 points and No. 14 Miami rebounded from a season-opening loss against top-ranked Florida to beat Wagner 83-57

CORAL GABLES, Fla. -- Shelton Henderson scored 19 points and No. 14 Miami rebounded from a season-opening loss against top-ranked Florida to beat Wagner 83-57 on Friday night.

Malik Reneau finished with 12 points and Caleb Gaskins added 11 for the Hurricanes (1-1), who outscored Wagner 24-3 in fast-break points and had 18 assists. Miami made 16 of 18 free throws and had a 52-22 advantage in the paint.

Reneau averaged a team-leading 18 points last season while Henderson scored 13 per game but both struggled in the opener Monday against Florida, finishing with five and seven, respectively.

After a second-chance layup by Tajae Jones gave the Seahawks their only lead at 10-8 in the opening four minutes, the Hurricanes responded with a 22-4 run.

Gaskins, Brent Bland and Nick Dorn hit 3-pointers to key the surge. Dante Allen’s layup with 4:35 capped the spurt and put Miami ahead 30-14.

Miami expanded its 34-21 lead at the break with a 12-2 surge to start the second half. Henderson had consecutive fast-break dunks to cap the surge and stretch the lead to 46-23. He scored 16 points on 8-of-9 shooting from the field after halftime.

Gaskins’ dunk with 4:46 remaining gave the Hurricanes their largest lead at 75-44.

Jones had 13 points and 11 rebounds for the Seahawks (0-2), who feature an entirely new roster under first-year coach Dwan McMillan.

Wagner visits No. 4 UConn on Monday.

Miami hosts North Florida on Monday.
