Olympique de Marseille have begun their UEFA Europa League campaign with two defeats. The first came away to Besiktas. Bruno Genesio’s side were looking to get on the board when they hosted Olympiacos on Thursday, however, they slumped to a 1-0 defeat.
It leaves OM as one of nine sides that are without a single point after two games. Speaking post-match, Marseille captain Timothy Weah said that it wasn’t the time for hopelessness. “100% we can still qualify. It’s about how you finish,” said the USMNT international. “Once we put our minds to it and continue to work as a team and push forward, and hopefully we get some wins.”
Next up, Genesio’s side face two away games. The first comes against Sturm Graz and the second against Bayer Leverkusen. Two games in, the situation is certainly salvageable. But by their next game at the Vélodrome, against Levski Sofia at the end of November, the situation could be more difficult. “We’ll believe until the end,” said Genesio. “Of course, it is not ideal to start with two defeats. There are still lots of games to go after the qualification, but we have to improve and be better than we were this evening.”
