Good, Bad, and the Ugly from the Vikings' loss in Week 8

All good things must come to an end. No one expected the 2026 Minnesota Vikings to be undefeated at this point in the season, and certainly didn’t expect them to remain undefeated throughout. They were bound to lose eventually, and that eventually came Sunday against the Detroit Lions.

Through the first six games of the season, there was a consistent theme: A lackluster offense being bailed out by a stifling defense. That formula can work when you’re beating up on bad teams like the Bucs, Dolphins, and Saints, but it’s not one you can rely on week-in and week-out against the best teams in the league. The Vikings learned that lesson the hard way.

Once again, the Vikings offense struggled to get anything going throughout the game. Quarterback Kyler Murray couldn’t find any semblance of consistency, and despite a concerted effort to target All-Pro receiver Justin Jefferson, the efforts amounted to next to nothing. Jefferson was targeted nine times, but it only amounted to five catches for 33 yards.

Unlike previous weeks, the defense wasn’t able to pick up the slack – particularly in the second half, and it cost them dearly. Now the team is left to pick up the pieces and try to figure out how they can catch a spark on offense, lest they continue to drop games with a brutal stretch of schedule coming up. The Vikings will face two of the best teams in the league over the next three weeks: the Bills and the 49ers, with another matchup against division foe Green Bay in between.

Before we get ahead of ourselves, let’s look at the Good, Bad, and Ugly from the Vikings’ first loss of the season in Week 8 against the Lions.

The Good: Pass Rush

To no one’s surprise, the Vikings’ defense came out playing like their hair was on fire, and wouldn’t let up on the gas at all in the first half. Brian Flores had his defense playing at an unreal level, putting pressure on the Lions’ offensive line and quarterback Jared Goff on seemingly every play. Nearly every pass play was a blitz, and it was damn effective in the first half.

Goff couldn’t get much of anything going, and the Vikings pass rush was good for four sacks in the first half – three of them coming from their leading pass rusher, Andrew Van Ginkel. That pressure faltered in the second half, unfortunately, but that first-half pass rush was electric. They’re going to need that kind of performance going forward if they have any hopes of staying in it with the Bills and 49ers coming up on the schedule.

The Bad: Kyler Murray

Perhaps the biggest theme for the Minnesota Vikings in 2026 has been horrendous quarterback play. Despite reeling off five wins in a row, they’ve gotten arguably backup-level play from everyone who has been at the helm of this offense, and that trend continued on Sunday against the Lions. Murray had one of his better passing performances yardage-wise on Sunday, with just 210 yards. That is a huge problem. Murray has yet to throw for 250+ yards on the season and just passed the 1,000-yard mark in his fifth game of the season. Murray threw for multiple touchdowns for the first time this season on Sunday, but overall it was another ugly performance. Guys were open, and Murray couldn’t find them. Balls fluttered downfield out of his hand. It was another ugly performance, and this time the defense wasn’t enough to bail him out.

It’s a broken record at this point, but the Kyler Murray experiment has failed in Minnesota. Despite his athletic ability, Murray has failed to grasp the offense and has failed to bring a dynamic aspect to the team’s offense. It’s clear that Murray isn’t the answer going forward for the Vikings, but with the Vikings’ success this season, they (likely) won’t be in a position to draft the QB of the future in the 2027 NFL Draft.

The Ugly: Second Half Rush Defense

For as good as the Vikings’ defense looked in the first half, the cracks in the armor started to show in the second. Particularly when it came to the team’s run defense. Blitzing and getting to the quarterback has been the calling card for Flores’ defense for years now, but all the pass rush in the world is useless if you can’t stop a team from running the ball down your throat.

That’s exactly what the Lions did to Minnesota in the second half. The duo of Jahmyr Gibbs and Sione Vaki torched the Vikings in the second half to the tune of nearly 100 yards. More important than the yardage, it was the inability of the Vikings’ defense to get a stop when they needed to. Minnesota was in control or within striking distance for nearly the entire game, but when it mattered most, the defense couldn’t hold up. When Minnesota desperately needed a stop to try and get points on the board, the Lions consistently got chunk yardage and quelled any hopes Vikings fans had of an improbable win.

With the likes of James Cook and Christian McCaffrey looming on the schedule, Sunday’s run defense doesn’t bode well for the future. If the Vikings’ offense can’t get their feet under them and start taking the pressure off the defense, this could be an ugly stretch for the Vikings. Minnesota will likely be able to pressure the likes of Josh Allen and Brock Purdy, but those rushing attacks could render the Vikings’ pressure moot.
