Michigan State basketball improved to 2-0 on the season Thursday night when the Spartans defeated the Toledo Rockets, 91-61. It was another convincing win from MSU, who are showing the strength of this team early in the year.
In the win, Michigan State had four in double figures, while the team shot 50.9% from the field to go along with a stellar 41.7% three-point percentage. The team outrebounded the Rockets 52-27, but lost the turnover battle 14-11.
In the end, the Spartans got a convincing win over the Rockets, and continued to show that the hype that came into the season was warranted.
Take a look at the three takeaways Spartans Wire had from the win over Toledo:
It may be a 37-point win over Quinnipiac and a 30-point win over Toledo, but the Spartans taking care of inferior competition and doing it in convincing fashion should not go unnoticed. Too many teams of the past, or other top ranked teams find themselves letting lesser teams hang around, but the Spartans taking care of their business shows a lot about this team.
Being able to come in and dominate games like this shows that this team is ready to be a big time player across the landscape of college basketball this season.
In the win against Toledo, it was Jasiah Jervis's coming out party. The true freshman finished with 16-points on 5-of-9 shooting, while going 4-for-7 from three. After a underwhelming debut against the Bobcats, it was great to see Jervis excel against Toledo.
If the Spartans are going to hit their ceiling this season, Jervis is going to have to be a major component in the Spartans success.
After two good things, there has to come a bad, and that is the Spartans free throw shooting. After a 15-for-26 night against Quinnipiac from the line, the Spartans followed it up with a 23-for-38 performance agaisnt the Rockets.
There is no secret here, this is pitiful and Tom Izzo knows it. The Spartans are going to need to drastically improve their performance at the line if the team plans to have success in the tough road ahead.
