New Zealand will be eager to bounce back when they take on India in the second ODI of the series in Wellington. The hosts are under pressure after suffering a five-wicket defeat (DLS method) in the opening encounter at Eden Park, leaving India with a 1-0 advantage in the five-match series.

With the series still in its early stages, the upcoming fixture presents an important opportunity for the Blackcaps to regroup and put up a stronger performance on home soil. One potential change to their lineup could come in the pace department, with an experienced fast bowler expected to return to the playing XI.

Matt Henry set to replace Blair Tickner

The most anticipated adjustment in New Zealand’s lineup is expected to involve their fast-bowling combination. Matt Henry could replace Blair Tickner for the Wellington encounter as the hosts look to strengthen their pace attack.

Henry brings considerable experience and has the ability to make an impact with the new ball. His accuracy, ability to generate seam movement and effectiveness with hard lengths could prove particularly useful at the Hnry Stadium, where the conditions are often favourable for fast bowlers.

Tickner, meanwhile, endured a difficult outing during the series opener. Although he struggled to make an impression with the ball, he provided some valuable runs lower down the order.

How New Zealand’s fast bowlers performed in the 1st ODI?

New Zealand’s bowling unit had an uphill task after their batting lineup managed only 185 runs in the opening ODI. Despite the modest target, the pacers managed to create a few difficult moments for the Indian batters. Jacob Duffy was the most successful bowler, claiming three wickets for 49 runs in seven overs. His efforts briefly put India under pressure during the chase.

Kyle Jamieson and Nathan Smith also contributed with a wicket apiece. Jamieson conceded 34 runs from his seven overs, while Smith finished with figures of 1/21 in 4.4 overs. Tickner, however, failed to pick up a wicket and was expensive, giving away 38 runs in just four overs at an economy rate of 9.50. His biggest contribution came with the bat, as he scored a brisk 34 off 23 deliveries to help New Zealand’s lower order add some crucial runs.

New Zealand unlikely to make changes to batting order

While a change in the bowling department appears likely, New Zealand are expected to retain their existing batting combination for the second ODI. Devon Conway was unavailable for the series opener after being ruled out due to a concussion, forcing the hosts to go with Will Young and Tim Seifert as their opening combination. The duo are likely to continue as Conway has now been ruled out of the entire series.

Seifert showed some encouraging form, scoring 38 off 43 deliveries to emerge as New Zealand’s leading run-scorer in the innings. Young, on the other hand, could manage only nine runs before losing his wicket. Henry Nicholls, Daryl Mitchell, Tom Latham and Glenn Phillips are also expected to retain their places in the middle order. The team management is likely to back the existing batting group rather than make multiple adjustments after just one game.

The hosts will need a much-improved batting display in Wellington, particularly against an Indian bowling attack that has already demonstrated its ability to apply pressure. A stronger performance from the top and middle order will be essential if New Zealand are to level the series.
