Everton fell to their first defeat of the season on Saturday, losing 2-0 to Chelsea – and a concerning habit is starting to develop for the Toffees.

After only drawing with Hull City, Toffees fans were hoping to see their side get back to winning ways, against a team Everton have had a good home record against in recent years.

But a Pedro Neto double at Hill Dickinson Stadium meant a first loss of the campaign for Everton, who were disappointing.

James Tarkowski put in a solid performance at the back and didn’t deserve to be on the losing side. But good individual performances beyond the captain were few and far between on the day, as Everton lost 2-0.

Everton were in the game at half-time, but the whole complexion changed with Pedro Neto’s first goal, and the timing of it was worryingly familiar.

Neto put Chelsea ahead just 43 seconds into the second-half on Saturday, which was extremely frustrating to see from an Everton point of view. Moyes will have given his players instructions on the basis of not conceding that early, so it would have meant a complete mindset change.

Everton conceding just after half-time in games is starting to become a bit of a problem.

We saw it last weekend against Hull, when Joe Gelhardt struck in the 48th minute.

Team against Minute conceded
vs Manchester United 48
vs Hull City 47
vs Chelsea 45

And Everton also conceded just after the restart against Manchester United, with Bryan Mbeumo bagging in the 47th minute.

For this to have happened three times now is a big concern. Seemingly, Everton lack focus in those moments just after the restart, and it is costing the Toffees the chance to get a foothold in the game.

A reporter actually did ask Moyes what he thought about this developing trend of conceding just after half-time. And the Everton boss replied: “I’m more disappointed that we lose two today than we lost two at Hull. I need to look to see. I’ve got an idea why it is but…

“It’s not really like us. Because if not, then today we lacked any real chances of creativity at times. I can only think of Thierno’s header in the first-half for any chance. It wasn’t that overall we played that badly. We just didn’t do enough and make any chances.

“So it meant if we got anything wrong defensively today, we were likely to be punished and we got a couple of things wrong. We were really unfortunate with the free-kick which could have bounced in our favour.”

It’s interesting to hear Moyes has an idea why his side are leaking goals just after the restart, and fans will hope this latest one against Chelsea is the last of its kind
