Harvey Barnes goes ballistic with Yoane Wissa in unseen spat and Newcastle land unwanted record

Frustration is creeping in around the Toon camp just weeks after a fantastic start to life under Matthias Jaissle

Newcastle United's Harvey Barnes shows his frustration after Yoane Wissa shoots wide against Aston Villa

As the clock ticked past the 85th minute, a game defining moment flashed by in the blink of an eye in front of the Gallowgate End.

Having rode their luck against Aston Villa, Newcastle United looked to have made a breakthrough into the final third as Yoane Wissa was slipped in with time ticking down. But as he weighed up his options and fired an effort wide, the screams of Harvey Barnes could be heard by fans behind the goal.

Barnes looked furious, and the moment did not go unnoticed from the Press box as ex-England international Stephen Warnock admitted to BBC Sport, saying: "Harvey Barnes is going ballistic. He wants a slide ball to him. But credit to Pau Torres, he just holds his line and forces the move. I can see why Barnes is complaining there."

It had been a frustrating evening for Barnes in truth, as he struggled to get a clear sight of the goal and struggled to threaten Villa. But he was not alone in terms of poor performers on the day as Newcastle struggled in all departments in this one and the corner needs to be turned sooner rather than later.

Matthias Jaissle accepts boos at full-time

There were boos at half-time and full-time, something unthinkable only a few weeks ago. But if the honeymoon period appears to be over for the German coach, he suggested that he understood the complexities hovering above St James' Park.

When asked about the negative reaction after the 1-0 defeat, Jaissle said: "For sure, they wished for another result. That’s their right. "They all come here to celebrate three points. We couldn’t deliver that today."

Jaissle felt that his team DID give a response after the 4-1 loss at Coventry on Monday, albeit a partial one.

He said: "It was a game where we were dominating. Overall, I thought I was seeing a team giving a response.

"We had many situations where you saw that we were going to win that game and then we conceded a goal.

"We also need to be honest. We were shaky until half-time but then after that we showed a good response after half time.

"The second 45 minutes were again really aggressive. We won the important duels. Unfortunately, we were just not smart enough in our decision-making in the final third, so that is something we need to improve.

"There were many occasions where we didn't find the right pass. Sometimes, it's not the right timing. These things need to be combined pretty soon to be more efficient."

Newcastle set ALL-TIME unwanted record at St James' Park

Having leaked four goals at Coventry on Monday night, the Magpies had been told to keep it "clean" in both boxes. But managed to fail on both counts as Johan Manzambi was allowed to head home freely and Newcastle failed to have a shot in the penalty area.

To cap it all off United landed an unwanted record as they spluttered to defeat and avoided a shut out. The Magpies are now without a home clean sheet in each of their last 16 games in all competitions - the longest run in their history.

The previous worse run was between December 1998 and September 1999.
