“I hope it makes sense at full time” – Derek McInnes’ bizarre Rangers admission
Derek McInnes Dundee
Derek McInnes speaks to Rangers TV before KO at Dundee.

Ibrox Noise has been sitting on this ‘exclusive’ for some considerable time. It was revealed pre-match by Derek McInnes before his side took the field in Dundee, and we raised more than an eyebrow at the time.

Sadly, that was justified by the final result.

Initially it was the team selection. Why on earth had Kevin Kelsy, our main striker, been dropped, and why was Ryan Naderi playing that role when he can’t.

But then when Rangers TV’s Louise Shaw asked McInnes the thinking behind the switch, it made absolutely no sense.

McInnes said specifically:

“Yes, it’s just to really put Minsu more central, similar system in terms of how we played at Aberdeen at the start of this winning run. We expect Dundee to come on, full press. They’ve been good at that 4-4-2. We want to find spaces, we want to try and control the middle of the pitch. And with Bad coming in off that right hand side… you know we feel he’s had to wait patient, training well, he’s eager to go and take his opportunity. And hopefully we see that tonight.”

This in itself is some strange reasoning. Emulating a pretty poor performance at Aberdeen with a similar formation?

He went on about Kelsy:

“It’s no reflection of Kevin’s performance, he scores a goal and he does well last week and he’s got a big part to play in this game. But we just feel the little tweak to the system will help us tonight and hopefully that makes a lot of sense when we speak again after the game.”

Well if ever a tweak did NOT make sense it was this one.

McInnes’ admission here that Kelsy has been great makes even less sense when he’s the one to make way for Naderi playing up front alone.

McInnes’ reason for making a ‘tweak’ really don’t add up, and we didn’t think they did at the time.

Had Rangers won this one, yes, the reasons wouldn’t matter. But they didn’t.

7 wins in a row and somehow McInnes thought this match was the one to experiment a change in his team.

We point again to our suspicions he was influenced by media pressure from Algeria and possibly those connections with the loan from Stuttgart to use Bouanani. In truth the Algerian was about Rangers’ best player on the night, and clearly should have been playing more.

But the tweak that McInnes offered was clearly a fail, and the logic behind it even sillier.

At the very least, why not Kelsy himself up front?

We are all for rotation of players to keep things fresh, absolutely. But not an entire system.
