St. Joseph’s senior Molly Mayo delivered a meet record in the 100-yard breaststroke in the preliminaries of the city championship on Friday with a time of 1:04.60.
Entering the finals, she found one more gear and broke her own record to clinch first place in the event in 1:04.51. The previous record of 1:04.93 was set in 2020.
Mayo’s performance was one of many standout times from the Redstickers. St. Joseph’s captured its 25th straight and 32nd overall Capital City Swim League Championship on Saturday at Crawfish Aquatics. On the boys’ side, Catholic won its 42nd city championship and 35th straight.
The Redstickers finished first with 573 points. Episcopal was second with 214, and Baton Rouge High placed third with 203. The Catholic boys won with 596 points. Baton Rouge High finished second with 345, and Episcopal was third with 174.
University High’s JJ Rush was named the girls swimmer of the meet after she placed first in the 50-yard freestyle and the 100-yard freestyle.
St. Joseph’s finished first in the 400-yard freestyle relay, 200-yard medley relay and 200-yard freestyle relay. The Redstickers’ time of 1:47.67 in the 200-yard medley broke the meet record they set in 2013 with a time of 1:48.55.
“Speechless,” Redstickers coach Jimmy Roberts said of his team’s performance. “Winning all three relays was a tremendous accomplishment. A testament to just the total team effort."
Roberts said his team switched its strategy entering the meet, wearing tech suits to prepare for state. He said the change produced faster times in the finals on Saturday.
He also praised Mayo for her performance in the preliminaries and finals.
“I told her I called her a superstar from the time she was 12 years old,” Roberts said. “She’s just that superstar that’s going to go out there and deliver.”
Mayo said this year’s meet was her favorite out of her four years swimming in high school. She was grateful to come away with the meet record.
“I was very happy with my swim yesterday,” Mayo said. “I knew going into it that I had more to improve. When I saw that I broke my record again, I was even more happy.”
Bears senior Noah Vargas broke the meet record for the boys 100-yard breaststroke. His time of 56.01 broke the previous record of 56.17 set in 2021.
“It was definitely exciting to get a meet record here,” Vargas said. “I haven’t gotten to that level all season really. Finally, getting back into it, it’s just really exciting for me.”
Catholic coach Sion Cavana applauded his senior, who was named the boys swimmer of the meet.
“He’s a special kid,” Cavana said. “He brings a fire to his races while having a humility and sort of quiet confidence about him. He just lets his actions speak for themselves, and then gets his teammates going.”
The Bears also placed first in the 200-yard medley relay and the 400-yard freestyle relay. Vargas added a first-place finish in the 200-yard individual medley. John Kirk placed first in the 200-yard freestyle and the 500-yard freestyle.
“We finally seem to be gaining some ground and rolling at this point in the season,” Cavana said. “A few negatives, but far more positives than the negatives.”
