311 runs, 30 sixes: Delhi U19 batter slams ultra rare 20-over triple ton

Aaryan Sharma did the unthinkable by scoring a triple ton in a 20-over game at the Schools Total T20 League on Friday, October 23.

Aaryan, captaining Delhi's Sumermal Jain School in the tournament's Super Knockout fixture against Indraprastha World School, notched up a sensational triple century. Opening the batting, he faced 93 of 120 deliveries and remained unbeaten on a staggering 311. He accumulated 288 of those runs in boundaries, smashing 27 fours and 30 sixes.

The 16-year-old batter added 219 runs in just 12.3 overs with Rijak Kohli (43 off 25) for the opening wicket. Even though his team lost another wicket quickly, Aaryan continued finding boundaries regularly, adding 166 runs for the third wicket with Sahib Singh in the last seven overs, with the latter scoring only two runs in the partnership.

On the back of their skipper’s mammoth knock, Sumermal Jain School posted 389 runs for the loss of just two wickets.

Interestingly, Aaryan is also part of the Delhi U19 team and featured in the Vinoo Mankad Trophy alongside Virender Sehwag’s son, Aaryavir Sehwag. He batted in the middle order and scored 124 runs in three innings, with a best score of 77*. He was also part of the New Delhi Tigers in the Delhi Premier League earlier this year.

As astonishing as it might seem, Aaryan’s triple-century feat in 20-over cricket was first achieved nine years ago, again by a Delhi youngster, Mohit Ahlawat. He was the first player to breach the 300-run mark in the shortest format of the game while featuring in a local T20 league game.

Tanmay Chaudhary came close to scoring a triple ton

Meanwhile, a day before Aaryan smashed an unbeaten 311, Tanmay Chaudhary, leading Modern School, thumped 278* off 77 balls with 22 fours and 27 sixes against Sachdeva Global in a knockout fixture of the same tournament.

Modern School didn’t lose a single wicket in 20 overs, scoring 413 runs, as Tanmay’s opening partner Shivesh Kapoor remained not out on 102 off 47 deliveries. The opposition team were then skittled for just 21 runs in 6.2 overs to go down by a staggering 392 runs.
