The Arizona Cardinals are finalizing a trade to send quarterback Jaoby Brissett to the Baltimore Ravens. The deal will be announced and finalized sometime this weekend.
Brissett requested the trade. He wasn't happy with his benching.
According to ESPN's Josh Weinfuss, "Brissett asked for a trade Monday when LaFleur called to tell him about the shake-up in the quarterbacks room."
That wasn't the impetus for trade talks, though. Also per Weinfuss, trade talks began on Sunday after Brissett was benched in the Cardinals' 33-30 overtime win over the Dallas Cowboys. The Ravens had suffered two quarterback injuries on Sunday — starter Lamar Jackson and backup Tyler Huntley. However, Brissett didn't want sit as the Cardinals' third-string quarterback.
Per SI.com's Donnie Druin, a video showed Brissett visibly unhappy during the game when talking with Mike LaFleur before the benching in the third quarter occurred.
Brissett was voted a team captain this year after he started the final 12 games of last season and was a big part of why receiver Michael Wilson and tight end Trey McBride had career seasons. He negotiated a big pay increase for this season.
Without the reported trade, he would have finished the season inactive for the rest of the year unless in injury were to occur.
With the trade, he will get to start for the foreseeable future.
