The Washington Commanders are bringing back a player that some fans never wanted to lose. On Tuesday, after placing defensive tackles Daron Payne and Javon Kinlaw and running back Jeremy McNichols on injured reserve, the Commanders claimed running back Robert Henry Jr. off waivers from the Seattle Seahawks.

Henry, 24, signed with the Commanders in April after going undrafted in the 2026 NFL Draft. After an impressive offseason, Henry also had a terrific training camp and shined in Washington’s first preseason game, carrying the ball 12 times for 75 yards and a touchdown.

This was an impressive run. Henry looked like he was on the verge of challenging for a spot on the 53-man roster, but he struggled in the remainder of the preseason, including fumbling. Washington didn’t want to lose him, so it re-signed him to the practice squad.

When the Seahawks’ top two running backs, rookie Jadarian Price and Zach Charbonnet, were both on injured reserve, they signed Henry off the Commanders’ practice squad. Henry did not receive any carries for the Seahawks over the past month, and they waived him on Monday with Price and Charbonnet back.

The 5-foot-9, 199-pound Henry Henry began his collegiate career at Jones College at Mississippi, then transferred to the University of Texas at San Antonio, where he played his final three seasons.

Henry rushed for 588 yards and 11 touchdowns in 2023, 706 yards and seven touchdowns in 2024 and 1,045 yards and nine touchdowns in 2025.

With starter running back Jacory Croskey-Merritt and McNichols on IR, the Commanders now have Austin Ekeler, Rachaad White, and Henry on the 53-man roster.
