Maja Chwalinska was full of kind words for Iga Swiatek after beating her countrywoman 7-5 6-1. The six-time Grand Slam champion was clearly injured and had a medical timeout late in set two.
After reaching the Wuhan Open final, the 16th seed said: "Obviously Iga wasn’t 100 per cent today, so I wish her all the best, of course. I hope she will be okay soon. It’s always tough to play against a fellow Polish player. She’s a great champion, it was a great honour for me to share the court with her today, and I think I still don’t really realise what’s going on, and the fact that I won against her is crazy."
Chwalinska now faces Sonay Kartal, whose name she struggled to pronounce during her on court interview. "For sure, another challenging match. I mean, Sonay – I’m sorry, I don’t how to pronounce the name!" she smiled.
"She’s amazing. I saw a few of her matches this week, and I was very, very, very impressed. So [it will be a ]great battle hopefully. I hope you guys will enjoy and support us. We will definitely give our best tomorrow."
