Aston Martin are ready to explore other engine manufacturer deals if Honda fails to hit a target set for the first Grand Prix of 2027.
It is no secret that Aston Martin have grown extremely frustrated at their underperforming Honda engine. In particular, Fernando Alonso has criticised Honda and even laughed at the engine down the team radio in Singapore.
While Adrian Newey has designed an impressive chassis, Aston Martin have been resigned to P10 in the Constructors’ Championship because of their extreme horsepower deficit to other manufacturers on the F1 grid.
Multiple reports suggested that Aston Martin held talks with Mercedes over a potential engine deal, while there were also links to Red Bull powertrains.
But Aston Martin are set to stick with Honda, provided that they make a “significant” leap in 2027.
According to AS, Aston Martin want Honda’s engine evolution for the first race of 2027 to provide a “significant leap towards the top 10”.
If Aston Martin aren’t able to compete for points in the season opener in Bahrain, then the report claims they “might look elsewhere” at other manufacturers.
It is quite clear that the relationship between Aston Martin and Honda is frosty as a result of their poor performance this season, yet the two brands will celebrate arm-in-arm at the upcoming United States Grand Prix.
The race in Austin marks Honda’s 500th Formula 1 Grand Prix, and staff from both companies are expected to celebrate with a commemorative photograph in the pit lane.
Aston Martin chiefs Lawrence Stroll and Adrian Newey are expected to be involved, as well as drivers Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll.
