Wayne Rooney turns down Manchester United job

Manchester United have a whole host of managers on their managerial list if they are to eventually sack Michael Carrick.

Manchester United’s managerial situation has become increasingly difficult to ignore as another disappointing run threatens to derail their season.

Michael Carrick remains in charge even after his side’s 3-0 defeat to Bournemouth extended their winless streak to 8 matches.

United’s hierarchy has explored possible alternatives, with Eddie Howe and Julian Nagelsmann among the names reportedly under consideration.

Yet changing the man in the dugout would not automatically resolve the problems that have repeatedly undermined the club’s progress.

Few people understand the expectations attached to the Old Trafford job better than Wayne Rooney, United’s record goalscorer and a five-time Premier League champion.

Wayne Rooney has now cast doubt on whether he would accept the Manchester United manager’s job if the opportunity arose, admitting that the club’s current situation would make him hesitate.

Speaking to Mark Goldbridge in a discussion about potential successors to Carrick, the former United captain questioned whether the role would appeal to any of the leading candidates.

“I think the problem you got is, will any of them realistically want to come into this mess?”

Goldbridge then asked Rooney whether he would take the job himself, prompting an equally direct and funny response.

“I dont think I would at the minute.”

The exchange comes after Rooney delivered an X-rated assessment of United’s current players, questioning their fight and expressing frustration with the standards at his former club.

Rooney’s comments carry weight given his own managerial experience.

Since retiring, he has taken charge of Derby County, DC United, Birmingham City and Plymouth Argyle, although his spells in management have brought mixed results.

He has not managed a club since leaving Plymouth by mutual agreement in December 2024.

Meanwhile, United’s search for a possible successor to Carrick has reportedly centred on several experienced names.

Unai Emery has attracted interest too, although compensation and the difficulty of luring him away from Aston Villa could complicate any approach.

Carrick has been allowed more time to turn things around, but the pressure is growing with every poor performance.
