It was November 1, 2001. I woke up. I wrote a few blurbs about what was going on in the NFL. I pressed the button. And off we went.
It is November 1, 2026. And here we are.
We wouldn’t be here if you weren’t reading the stuff we write. It’s that simple. Those of you who were around back then had plenty of other options for your time and attention. You’ve got even more options now. But enough of you have kept coming back (and enough of you have found us in the past 25 years) to keep the lights on, and then some.
After five years of dogpaddling (I quit for a day or so in 2002 because I thought it would never really turn into anything), Sprint came along with a sponsorship deal that made it clear that, sooner or later, PFT would stop being a hobby and start being a full-time job.
I remember not wanting it to become a job, because I didn’t want it to ever feel like a job. Even now, it usually doesn’t. Even when it does, it’s better than every other job I ever had, by a long shot.
None of it happens if you aren’t out there, reading the stuff we write, watching PFT Live/#PFTPM or the various clips we attach to the articles, and/or listening to the podcasts. It all changed in 2009 when NBC came along, in every way possible. It’s been great for us and, given that NBC keeps extending our contract, presumably good for NBC.
Still, it relies on you. If/when you ever decide you don’t care about what we have to say, it’s done. I’ll keep trying to give you a reason to keep coming back.
For now, we’ll keep rolling. It should be a busy day, with some excellent games in the afternoon windows. And the very small token of my appreciation for the folks who have been here the longest — and for everyone else — is the fully re-written Quarterback of the Future. The introduction explains how it came to be the first time around, and its direct connection to getting this operation started in the first place. Basically, without QBF there never would have been PFT.
Chapter One is live. I’ll post Chapter Two later today. And one per day, or maybe more often than that, until it’s all up. Far more importantly, we’ll keep posting the stuff you mainly come here to read, dozens per day and, on some days like today, more than 100.
So thank you. We hope you choose to stick around for the next 25 years, and beyond.
