Tottenham Hotspur outclassed Chelsea 2-0 at Stamford Bridge in the Premier League on Saturday evening.

After a goalless first half, an own goal from stand-in Chelsea goalkeeper Mike Penders in the 77th minute put Spurs in the lead. Just three minutes later, Cole Palmer was sent off after being shown a second yellow card for a stamp on Conor Gallagher. Mathys Tel found the back of the net for Tottenham in the 87th minute to secure a 2-0 win for Roberto De Zerbi’s side and take them only four points behind the Blues.

One of the architects of the Lilywhites’ victory was Mateus Fernandes. Roberto De Zerbi deployed the 22-year-old in his natural No.8 role alongside Sandro Tonali in a 4-2-3-1 formation. The Tottenham central midfielders ran the show and outworked Chelsea duo Jordan Henderson and Moises Caicedo.

Mateus Fernandes makes feelings clear after Tottenham’s win at Stamford Bridge

Fernandes put in his best performance in a Tottenham shirt, responding to the challenge set out to him by De Zerbi. The Portuguese talent was everywhere and made an impact at both ends of the pitch. He essayed a key role in Spurs’ first win at Stamford Bridge in over eight years.

After the game, the midfielder was asked about his thoughts on making Spurs history with the win. To which Fernandes told Sky Sports in an interview (h/t BBC Sport):

“We are here to change the club’s mentality; we want to beat the top teams, and make this victory for the fans.

“It takes time, I always believe in me and my teammates. We always play well, but when we play like this, we’re very happy.”

De Zerbi delighted with his team’s performance against Chelsea

De Zerbi was full of praise for his squad’s psychological shift following a dominant display against Chelsea. Indeed, our players stood up to the challenge and earned the bragging rights in a derby that saw tempers boil over in the second half.

The Italian gaffer’s plan was executed to perfection by his boys, marking Tottenham’s only second Premier League win at Stamford Bridge in 36 years. They took full advantage of a robust and disciplined display and a moment of madness from Palmer to silence the home crowd. It was vital to build on the Coventry City win, and the Tottenham players did exactly what was asked of them by the boss.

Spurs now have a full week to prepare for another London derby as they host Crystal Palace on October 31.
