EAST RUTHERFORD, New Jersey — During a post-game press conference last week, a reporter asked New Orleans Saints quarterback Tyler Shough if he had a broken bone in his left hand.
“I’m not even sure I can answer that,” Shough said.
That non-denial was, in effect, exactly what it appeared to be.
According to an ESPN report, Shough is playing with two broken bones in his left hand, an injury that occurred during the Saints’ blowout loss against the Atlanta Falcons on Monday Night Football.
Including Sunday’s game against the New York Giants, Shough has played the last three games with a glove covering his left hand. The second-year quarterback has repeatedly said the injury — which is to his non-throwing hand — has not affected his play, though it has altered how he’s had to go about doing his job.
Under normal circumstances, Shough would be able to hand the ball off with both of his hands depending on the direction of the run. But since the injury, he’s had to use his right hand exclusively for handoffs, including run plays to the right side of the formation where he’d typically use his left hand.
"It didn’t really limit me at all,” Shough said this week in the lead up to the Giants game. “It was just a simple switch of (hands) on certain plays with the hand off and different play actions I would try to use two hands.”
Shough has been a full participant in practice for most of the last two weeks.
