3 things from Charlotte's 128-81 defeat against Atlanta

The Charlotte Hornets suffered a disheartening defeat Friday night, losing their home opener by a margin of 47 points to the Atlanta Hawks. Atlanta led for 96% of the contest, dominating the Hornets defensively with 27 forced turnovers and 17 steals. Naz Reid, who committed seven turnovers, led the team in scoring with 17 points to go along with six rebounds, two assists and one steal.

As for Atlanta, Jalen Johnson put on a show, finishing with 19 points, seven rebounds, eight assists and three steals. Aaron Wiggins also finished with 19 points, converting on seven of his nine shot attempts. Dyson Daniels, CJ McCollum, Nickeil Alexander-Walker, Onyeka Okongwu and Corey Kispert all finished in double figures as well.

Prior to Charlotte's contest against the Miami Heat Saturday, here are three things to keep an eye on as the season progresses.

3. Turnovers

While this is an issue that will subside with improved health and increased chemistry, it's never a good thing to give away the ball 27 times. Charlotte had these same struggles during the preseason, averaging 23.2 turnovers in four games. As previously stated, the Hornets will need time to develop chemistry with six new players joining the team this offseason. Not to mention, Coby White and Kon Knueppel (who are currently injured) will need time to assimilate with their new teammates following their eventual return.

2. Brandon Miller has to perform to the level of his contract

The danger of signing Brandon Miller to a contract extension so early was that the Hornets have yet to see proof that he's an All-NBA or All-Star caliber player. So far this season, Miller has yet to live up to those expectations. After scoring 18 in his season opener, Miller scored six against Atlanta on 2-for-14 shooting, including 1-for-11 from 3-point range. While there is still plenty of time for Miller and the Hornets to turn things around, fans were hopeful for a better start.

1. Charlotte needs secondary scoring/less reliance on 3-point shooting

With White and Knueppel sidelined, Charlotte's need for secondary scoring is apparent. The Hornets could use a player who can create their own shot in isolation instead of depending on 3-pointers so often. Charlotte attempted 51 3-pointers Friday night and converted on only 11 (22%).
