Kimi Antonelli is on the verge of history in 2026 as he looks set to wrap up the Formula 1 title, which Oliver Bearman is finding tough to watch.
The Italian is 102 points clear of Mercedes teammate George Russell ahead of the United States GP. Antonelli can win the title this weekend, but it requires Russell finishing ninth or lower and Lewis Hamilton finishing fifth or lower.
The 20-year-old has been dominant in 2026. With eight wins and podiums in every race bar three, no one has come close to matching Antonelli across the season.
Toto Wolff thought Antonelli would peak by 2030, but he is already showing his incredible talent in just his second F1 season. He is now on the verge of becoming the sport’s youngest champion.
While Antonelli is flourishing, Bearman has been left wondering what could have been if he had the chance to win. Currently in his second full season with Haas, the Brit has scored just 23 points this year.
Bearman was Antonelli’s teammate in Formula 2, and both joined the F1 grid in 2025. Speaking on the BBC’s Chequered Flag podcast, the Haas driver admits he finds it hard watching the Mercedes star win while he has the same experience.
Bearman said: “It’s incredibly impressive to see what he’s achieving this year. I certainly didn’t expect that level of performance from him, given his rookie season, but hats off to him.
“It must be incredibly challenging to perform at that level every weekend, and he’s doing a great job, and yeah, you can only say well done.
“it’s incredibly impressive, and it seems like a matter of races until he takes the title. On my side, of course, I would say, it’s not frustrating, but it’s difficult to see that in a way, given that we’ve got the same amount of experience in F1.
“And I feel like I’m performing at a level that, I can also fight if I was given the opportunity. But also, I think it fills me with, how can I say it, it gives me a lot of assurance, because I raced Kimi in Formula 2, and to see him doing really well is great for him.
“But also I think it gives me the knowledge that one day, should I get that opportunity, I think I could fight for victories too.”
Bearman hopes to land a Ferrari seat in the future, but with Hamilton and Charles Leclerc tied down for the next few years, he is set to stay with Haas for a third year.
Fellow Ferrari junior Rafael Camara is joining Haas next season, replacing Esteban Ocon. If the Brazilian manages to beat Bearman, he could usurp him in the pecking order in Maranello.
