Newark boxer Emma Dolan loses her British super-flyweight title after a first-round stoppage against Commonwealth and IBF Inter-Continental champion Shannon Ryan

Newark boxer Emma Dolan suffered a devastating 46-second stoppage defeat in her rematch with Shannon Ryan in Sheffield on Saturday night.

The much-anticipated bout was expected to go the distance but Ryan (12-1) had other ideas and snatched away Dolan’s British super-flyweight title while retaining her Commonwealth and IBF Inter-Continental belts.

Dolan (9-2) won the first meeting and the outcome shocked trainer/manager Carl Greaves.

“I’ve been involved in professional boxing for over 30 years, and I’ve never seen anything like that happen in the ring before,” said Greaves.

“It’s so hard to put into words how myself, Emma and the team feel at this moment in time. I’m still in shock now.”

After a cautious 10 seconds or so with both fighters trying to find their range, Ryan caught Dolan with a heavy right which wobbled her and seized the opportunity to drop the Newark fighter on 20 seconds with another big right hand.

Dolan rose off the canvas and took the count from referee Howard Foster, but Ryan sensing victory jumped in again with three more right-hand shots finding their target and Dolan hit the canvas again.

She bravely beat the count but Foster had seen enough, waving off proceedings. Trainer Greaves had also thrown in the towel to save his fighter from serious injury.

“I felt that Emma won their first fight by a wider margin two years ago and that was the view shared by many observers ringside that night in Birmingham,” said Greaves.

“I’ve been watching boxing for 41 years and been involved in professional boxing for 30 of those.

“I honestly can’t think of a rematch going the way it has for Shannon Ryan at the weekend.

“It’s been a busy year for Emma with a world title defeat in April, a tune-up in August and Saturday night. Two of those have been stoppage defeats. She needs to have a good rest, and we will sit down at some point to work out what’s next.”

Dolan was gracious in defeat after the second loss of her pro career.

“I can’t sit here and make excuses,” she said.

“I had a brilliant camp to prepare for Saturday night.

“I would like to thank my trainer/manager Carl Greaves for everything he does to get me ready, my partner Tom Quinton, Adam Kettleborough, Eddie Hearn and Matchroom Boxing for having me on the show.

“I’d also like to thank Baz Jordan, all my sponsors, all my family and friends, everybody who bought a ticket for Saturday night and everybody who has messaged since Saturday night to check I’m OK. I could not do any of this without their amazing support.”
