Travis Hunter successfully displayed his talent during the Jacksonville Jaguars’ Week 6 showdown against the Houston Texans.
Hunter made plays on both sides of the ball for the Jaguars in the fourth quarter at Wembley Stadium on Sunday. He caught a touchdown pass, then intercepted C.J. Stroud in the end zone on the Texans’ next drive. Despite that, the Texans left London with a 34-31 win when Ka’imi Fairbairn hit a 49-yard field goal as time expired.
The loss snapped the Jaguars’ three-game winning streak and dropped them to 4-2, though they remain first in the AFC South. The Texans improved to 2-4 with their second straight win. However, Hunter’s two plays drew praise on X right after the interception, while Jacksonville still trailed.
Hunter’s touchdown came with 11:26 left. Trevor Lawrence found him for a 7-yard score that capped a nine-play, 61-yard drive and cut Houston’s lead to 31-28. His first catch of that drive was a 26-yard catch-and-run that put Jacksonville deep in Texans territory.
The score was his first touchdown of the season and the second of his career, and both came at Wembley. The first was against the Los Angeles Rams last year.
The touchdown came in a season when Jacksonville has scaled back Hunter’s offensive role while relying on him more heavily as one of its primary cornerbacks.
That’s where he struck next. The Texans were driving on their next possession when Stroud rolled out, and Hunter picked off his pass in the end zone with 3:59 remaining.
Hunter, who ranks 21st on PFN’s CB Impact Metric, finished with four catches on four targets for 59 yards to go with the interception. According to the Jaguars, he is the first player since Philadelphia Eagles safety Brian Dawkins in 2002 to have a receiving touchdown and an interception in the same game.
Kurt Benkert called it a “Travis Hunter Legacy Game.”
The Ringer’s Raheem Palmer was just as emphatic: “What a [expletive] game from Travis Hunter. He’s balling out of his mind.”
JP Acosta took a longer view, writing, “The Jaguars won the trade.”
One fan called Hunter “the greatest athlete I have ever seen.”
Carlos A. Lopez wrote that Hunter “has been outstanding this season.”
One user on X went after Hunter’s doubters: “I thought y’all said Travis Hunter couldn’t play on both sides.”
PFN posted its own reply to the NFL’s account:
Luke Sawhook went even bigger. He asked whether Hunter’s game “might be one of the most impactful games by an individual player in NFL history,” pointing to the touchdown on one drive and the interception on the next.
Houston still got the last word. Cam Little tied the game 31-31 with a 60-yard field goal with 1:55 left, but that gave the Texans enough time to set up Fairbairn’s winner.
That leaves the Jaguars with a question to take into their Week 7 bye about whether a game like Sunday’s earns Hunter more work on offense the rest of the way.
