Leeds United fans hoped they would leave Elland Road having watched their side beat Man United at home for the first time since 2002, but it wasn’t to be as the two sides drew 1-1.
It had been 24 years since Leeds last won against Man United at Elland Road. Leeds have since beaten them twice, but both wins came at Old Trafford – the FA Cup win in 2010, and last season’s 2-1 victory.
On Sunday, all the talk has been about Man United’s disarray, and how Leeds would be favourites to win. What followed was a cagey, spicy affair that was largely equal. Man United took the lead in the first half.
Bryan Mbeumo finished superbly in the first half, before Calvert-Lewin scored again for Leeds from an Anton Stach corner. The scoreline read 1-1 at full-time at Elland Road. Below are our player ratings:
James Trafford – 7
Had very little to do despite the feisty nature of the game. Huge tackle, 40 yards from goal, on 33 minutes to deny Amad Diallo. Perfect timing. Could do nothing about Bryan Mbeumo’s opener in the 35th minute.
James Justin – 7
Some lovely early crosses as he combined well, once again, with Jayden Bogle. Slightly late in getting across Mbeumo for their goal, but not a huge mistake.
Nico Elvedi – 8
Inch-perfect performance from one of Daniel Farke’s best-ever bargains. Almost scored inside the first 30 minutes with a superb header. Won many duels and completed north of 90% of his passes throughout.
Tarik Muharemovic – 7
Good back-post header on 28 minutes to flick a cross behind for a corner. Very solid, and got himself an assist by winning the first contact from a Stach corner, which then found itself at Calvert-Lewin’s feet.
MORE LEEDS UNITED STORIES
Jayden Bogle – 6
Always a threat on the right flank, perhaps lacking the impact he has had recently. Brilliant tackle to deny Diego Dalot on 30 minutes. Then, a great solo run.
Anton Stach – 6
Very involved. Some lovely runs. It was his corner that allowed Dominic Calvert-Lewin to score from, after a knockdown from Tarik Muharemovic. Snatched at a volley in the 72nd minute, had a chance at the end.
Ethan Ampadu – 6
Unsurprisingly involved in some meaty tackles and having some banter with the away fans. Completed more than 90% of his passes, the face of intensity in midfield – but Carlos Baleba was the better player.
Ao Tanaka – 5
A couple of lapses in concentration, but had some decent efforts from the edge of the area. Quite a typical Tanaka performance of last season, rather than this.
Gabi Gudmundsson – 7
Gudmundsson is a train on that left flank when he gets going. He’s so difficult to stop, and Man United resorted to hacking him down. But as the game went on, with a yellow card, he was scared to tackle.
Noah Okafor – 5
Very quiet afternoon for Okafor. Having been the toast of Leeds fans following last season’s 2-1 win, he struggled to get involved on Sunday. Improved in the second half before being replaced by Nmecha.
Dominic Calvert-Lewin – 8
Involved in plenty of duels and often got the better of Man United’s defenders, but ultimately was often the only player in the box. Predatory instinct and positioning to score Leeds’ equaliser, his fifth this term.
Lukas Nmecha – 6
Farke made his first sub in the 74th minute, bringing the Germany international on after 74 minutes. But he had little impact and had little involvement, as the game ended 1-1.
Sean Longstaff – N/A
Replaced Tanaka on 81 minutes, but the midfielder had little time or possession to do anything as the Whites searched for a winner.
