Talking Points: Gary O’Neil Previews Hull City Clash

Ipswich Town Manager Gary O’Neil spoke to the media ahead of Saturday’s clash against Hull City.

Ahead of Town’s momentum, O’Neil discussed Sasa Lukic’s injury situation, Dara O’Shea’s leadership and how the team will have to step up following last weekend’s draw at home to Nottingham Forest.

Lukic Getting Closer

The main positive from O’Neil’s press conference was that he mentioned that Sasa Lukic has returned to playing on the grass this week. Although he wouldn’t confirm that he will be available for the game against Hull, O’Neil said that he would love to have him in his starting line-up.

“He was on the grass today and looked good. We’ll make a call on Saša tomorrow. I’d love to have him in the starting XI.”

However, as Lukic gets closer to returning to fitness, O’Neil will have to make another big decision in the packed centre of the park. O’Neil confirmed that all other players are fit and available.

Positive Response From Forest

O’Neil was pleased with how his team performed in the tough test against Nottingham Forest. O’Neil was pleased with certain aspects of the team’s performance, particularly their ability to deal with counter-attacks, but believes there is more to come.

Although the result was positive, O’Neil wants to keep improving.

Heavy Respect for Hull City

Although Hull have been near the bottom of the possession data this season, O’Neil made it clear that he believes this will be a tough afternoon. O’Neil complimented the Tigers for having a clear identity and believes they will cause problems for any team.

“I have a lot of respect for Hull and what they’re doing. They have a way and it doesn’t matter what way that is. They’re very very good at it. They have a style that causes teams problems.”

O’Neil also added that he doesn’t think possession will be something Ipswich will dominate against the hosts. He added that it’s important to acknowledge the positives of the opposition.

O’Neil feels that Hull play a direct style, work hard and are well organised.

O’Shea Leading the Way

O’Neil complimented captain Dara O’Shea for his leadership. The Republic of Ireland international has quickly become a leader within the squad, and O’Neil couldn’t hide his admiration.

“I’m over the moon with how well Dara has done. He’s adapted unbelievably well to leading the group. His performances have been what you’d want from a leader.”

O’Shea has been key in Ipswich’s positive start, and O’Neil feels he is setting the standard.

Good Relationship With Ashton

O’Neil spoke positively about his relationship with Mark Ashton. He described him as a very driven individual who knows what he wants from everyone.

O’Neil explained that although he has a strong friendship with the CEO, he knows that he wants the same standards and goals from the club. O’Neil complimented Ashton and the club’s owners for creating a positive atmosphere.

O’Neil also admitted that he is fascinated by successful individuals and how dedicated they are to consistently performing at a high standard.
