Fiji Bati opened their 2026 Rugby League World Cup campaign in style, cruising to a comprehensive 40-12 victory over Cook Islands.
A dominant seven-try display saw Fiji put the game out of reach in the first half, establishing a 28-0 lead by the interval before comfortably managing the second half.
Halves duo Kurt Donoghoe and Brandon Wakeham orchestrated the attack, registering five try assists and five line-break assists between them, while centre Solomone Saukuru crossed for a double.
Former Fijian dual-code star Lote Tuqiri was full of praise for the clinical nature of the performance.
“It’s complete and utter domination,” Tuqiri said. “They were all class.”

Despite falling behind early, the Cook Islands produced several positive moments throughout the 80 minutes.
Rookie stand-off Maui Winitana-Patelesio delivered an impressive solo display, compiling 137 running metres and stepping past multiple defenders to score a clever second-half try.
Prop Davvy Moale was also prominent in the middle, running for 112 metres and crossing for a try, while second-rower Reuben Porter produced a series of crucial goal-line tackles.
However, Fiji’s early firepower proved decisive as six different players crossed the line to seal a memorable opening-round win.
Following the final whistle, Brandon Wakeham was officially named Player of the Match after a stellar all-round performance. The Fiji half-back finished the contest with three try assists, two line-breaks, four tackle breaks, an astute kicking game, and six goals off the tee in a total masterclass.
