Mississippi State Bulldogs quarterback Kamario Taylor is set to miss the rest of the season and will reportedly undergo surgery on his injured toe. Taylor, who has been one of college football’s breakout stars this season, sustained the toe injury against the Missouri Tigers on September 26.
On Tuesday, the college football world reacted to the announcement of Taylor’s unfortunate season-ending injury.
Media personality Dave Portnoy suggested that Taylor had played his last game for the Bulldogs.
“There are so many people asking what my sources are saying about Kamario having played his last game in Starkville but I wont engage in those types of rumors out of respect to @BFW even though where there is smoke there is generally fire,” Portnoy hinted.
One fan was heartbroken for the Bulldogs, who had seen their performances improve dramatically with Taylor under center.
“Hate this for Miss State & College Football. One of the most dynamic players in the country. Sincerely hope he’s back in Starkville next season,” the fan wrote.
Another fan bemoaned the loss of a promising season for Mississippi State.
“Rotten news out of Starkville. State was destined for a magical season before his injuries,” the fan opined.
“Locked On SEC” host Chris Gordy was saddened for the Mississippi State fans, who had grown fond of the quarterback. “Tough news for State fans. Kamario was one of the best stories the first month of the season,” he wrote on X.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter pointed out Taylor’s potential as one of the top quarterbacks in the 2028 NFL Draft. “A potential top QB in the 2028 NFL Draft,” Schefter wrote.
One fan was hopeful that the injured sophomore quarterback would return renewed. The fan bemoaned, “He was electric when healthy; hope he heals well and we see him back on the field next year!”
Taylor served primarily as Blake Shapen’s backup last season, making his first start in the Egg Bowl against the Ole Miss Rebels and finishing his freshman season with 629 passing yards and five scores, adding 458 yards and eight touchdowns on the ground. He started the season on fire, leading Mississippi State to a 4-0 liftoff before his injury impacted his appearances.
Despite getting injured against Missouri in September, Taylor attempted to play in clashes against the Alabama Crimson Tide and Oklahoma Sooners, but he struggled to perform at his usual best, leaving both games early.
Taylor will finish the 2026 season with 1,460 passing yards on 65.4% completion, 17 touchdowns and four interceptions, adding 147 rushing yards and one score for the Bulldogs. He earned a PFN’s College QB Impact grade of 82.1, ranking No. 38 among quarterbacks.
