Intriguing stat that sets up Chelsea away to Everton nicely

Chelsea travel to Everton for an intriguing clash between one of the Premier League’s most resilient defences and one of its most potent attacks.

After six matches, Everton have conceded just five goals, giving them a joint-best defensive record in the division, while Chelsea rank among the league’s leading goalscorers. The contest promises to be a compelling test of whether Everton’s defensive discipline can withstand Chelsea’s attacking firepower.

That makes this a rare test of Chelsea’s attacking form against a side built to frustrate. Everton’s record has come from organisation and discipline rather than luck, and teams who have tried to break them down have found little room to work.

David Moyes has built his side around a defensive unit, with James Tarkowski and Jarrad Branthwaite forming the heart of Everton’s back line. However, Branthwaite is an injury doubt, which could provide a timely boost for Chelsea ahead of the clash.

Chelsea’s goals, meanwhile, have shown how dangerous they can be when the front line gets going, including the 5-1 win over Bournemouth last weekend. Can Everton withstand Chelsea’s attacking flow, particularly (hate to say it) from JP Morgan - Morgan Rogers, Cole Palmer and Joao Pedro.

The timing of the fixture presents an additional challenge for Chelsea. Reece James is set for an extended spell on the sidelines, while the defensive frailties that have troubled the Blues throughout the season remain unresolved.

Simply trying to outscore Everton is unlikely to be a successful approach against a side that prides itself on defensive discipline and rarely allows matches to become open, end-to-end contests.

Chelsea will need to show patience in possession, movement and creativity in the final third, and, above all, a clinical edge when opportunities arise. Breaking down Everton’s well-organised defence could prove decisive in determining the outcome.

Ultimately, this fixture offers Chelsea a valuable measure of their progress. Their attacking quality has helped mask defensive shortcomings at various points this season, but facing one of the Premier League’s most disciplined defences will test just how effective that approach really is.

A victory would underline the potency of Chelsea’s attack and their ability to deliver against well-organised opponents. However, a frustrating afternoon at Everton would raise questions about whether the Blues rely too heavily on exploiting space that Moyes’s side are unlikely to concede.

How Chelsea respond to that challenge could reveal much about their credentials and the areas they still need to improve.

An impressive record is at stake for the Blues if they fail to show that attacking talent.
