Jaiswal misses out from ODIs, young keeper gets maiden call-up: Winners and losers from India’s squads for New Zealand tour

India have confirmed their ODI and Test squads for the upcoming all-format tour of New Zealand, with several notable inclusions and omissions.

After a largely expected T20I squad, India threw out a few surprises in their teams for the two longer formats. What also stood out was the management’s keenness to focus on Test cricket, even with the ODI World Cup less than a year away and WTC final qualification highly unlikely.

With the Test series starting just four days after the fifth ODI, Shubman Gill, KL Rahul, Prasidh Krishna and Anshul Kamboj will leave the ODI squad after the first three matches to prepare for the two-Test series.

Fourth and fifth ODIs: Shreyas Iyer (c), Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Tilak Varma, Ishan Kishan (wk, vc), Nitish Kumar Reddy, Axar Patel, Naman Dhir, Auqib Nabi, Gurnoor Brar, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Arshdeep Singh, Kumar Kushagra (wk), Mohammed Siraj, Yash Thakur, Kuldeep Yadav.

Winners

Anshul Kamboj

Kamboj has been rewarded for his consistency in domestic cricket and for India A, finding a spot in both the ODI and Test squads. He was with the A team on their tour of England in 2025 when he was fast-tracked to the Test squad and handed a debut after Arshdeep Singh’s injury. His ODI debut, too, came in similar circumstances: Kamboj was withdrawn from India A’s four-day game against Australia A to play the third ODI of the recent series against the West Indies after Prasidh’s injury. A prolonged run with the A side has now translated into a call-up to the senior team, and with a question mark over Prasidh’s fitness, he could well play the first three ODIs.

Ishan Kishan

Until very recently, Kishan wasn’t part of India’s ODI plans. The Afghanistan series in June marked his first appearance in the format since the 2023 World Cup, and he grabbed the opportunity by slamming a rapid ton in Lucknow. Four months later, Kishan has been named the vice-captain for the fourth and fifth ODIs against New Zealand. During this period, he has played and performed, across formats, including a double hundred in the Duleep Trophy final as captain. Already among the first names in the T20I squad, Kishan’s promotion to vice-captaincy signals he could now be a regular feature in ODIs as well.

Naman Dhir

Within a month of his international debut, Naman Dhir has pushed his way into World Cup conversations, though that is still a long shot. He has featured in every match since his call-up, and after finding a spot in the T20I team for the New Zealand tour, he was also picked for the ODIs. A batting all-rounder who bowls handy off-spin, Dhir is the archetype of the Gautam Gambhir player, and hasn’t done any harm to his chances with his performances so far. He is likely in the squad as an alternative for Washington Sundar, with the ability to bat in the lower order and bowl five to six overs of finger spin.

Kumar Kushagra

Kumar Kushagra, the 21-year-old wicketkeeper-batter from Jharkhand, received his maiden international call-up for the last two ODIs for the New Zealand tour, with Rahul stepping out for Test preparations. Kushagra will already be in New Zealand at the time with India A, having been called up to their squad for the three unofficial Test series against New Zealand A as Pant’s replacement. He enjoyed a stellar Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy last year, before slamming a century in the Duleep Trophy final for East Zone and a ton for India A in the unofficial Test against Australia A in Puducherry. However, it’s unlikely that he makes his India debut, with his state captain Ishan Kishan ahead in the wicketkeeping pecking order.

Losers

Yashasvi Jaiswal

Even with Gill and Rahul’s absence from the last two ODIs, Yashasvi Jaiswal couldn’t find a spot in the 50-over squad. Though he is part of the India A squad for the three four-dayers against New Zealand A, the southpaw hasn’t done anything wrong to not be considered among potential top-order options for the World Cup. He has two hundreds in his last three ODIs, including one in his last 50-over fixture against Afghanistan in June. But clearly, the management is prioritising the Test series over white-ball games.

Ravindra Jadeja

Ravindra Jadeja’s ODI career could potentially be over. Naman Dhir’s emergence, coupled with his own waning powers in the white-ball game, has seen the veteran all-rounder lose his ODI spot. Jadeja has picked up just two wickets in five ODIs this year at 135, and it is unlikely India will take him to South Africa next year. In Axar Patel, Washington and Dhir, India have three spin-bowling all-round options ahead of Jadeja in the pecking order.

Manav Suthar

Manav Suthar was named in the India A squad for their tour of New Zealand but, strangely, wasn’t picked in the senior Test squad. This could perhaps be because India already have Jadeja, Washington and Kuldeep Yadav as spin-bowling options for conditions that wouldn’t be as conducive to spin as the subcontinent. Gambhir also prefers batting depth over bowling strength, and this could be where Washington trumped Suthar. The left-arm spinner, however, has had a brilliant start to international cricket, having taken 23 wickets in three Tests at 17.34, including a six-wicket haul in his debut game. He also enjoyed a strong County Championship season with Warwickshire, taking 27 wickets in six matches at 19.92.
