The Blues' centre-back wiped out James McAtee with a poorly timed challenge as he galloped through on goal early in the second half.

Referee Thomas Bramall waved play on but was then sent to the pitch side screen by VAR to review whether the Blues defender should be sent off for denying a goal-scoring opportunity.

He ultimately decided that McAtee's touch was taking him away from goal and opted to award a free-kick and yellow card.

But Glasner disagreed with the call.

"I think it was a red card," he told the Nottingham Post. "On the other side, I think we couldn't have played a more dominant second half than we did.

"But I think it was a red card, yes. When you run straight to the goal and you have the ball between your legs, it's very difficult to get a finish.

"We're telling our players that sometimes you need to create an angle and go half right, half left because then it makes the finish easier and also the goalkeeper has to move.

"Then you have the near and the far post open or one corner open. I think Macca prepared the finish already because on the left side it was Diop.

"That's why he needed to go there. But again, the referee decided it that way and we have to accept it.

"But also to mention, I think today, for me, it was the right procedure how it should work.

"The referee takes a decision, the VAR intervenes, he goes to the screen and watches it and then takes a decision - whatever it is - because he did it in the best purpose.

"We had a disallowed goal at home where the VAR intervened and the referee didn't even watch it back.

"I think this is how the procedure should work and I think this was everything correct, just a different opinion than the referee."

Perhaps unsurprisingly, Town boss Gary O'Neil felt Diop deserved to stay on the pitch.

"It's a foul," he admitted. "Issa misses the ball and catches McAtee. I thought Leif Davis was in a good position to cover though. And I thought McAtee's touch was slightly big and going away from goal, probably.

"So, I think they came to a real good conclusion with a good process. But I haven't watched it back slowed it down. I'm going purely off what I saw on the field. It looked like Leif was in a good enough position.

"I don't think you would be able to say that that was a definite goal-scoring opportunity where James McAtee gets through against Walts (Christian Walton) without Leif getting back.

"It's one that can obviously go for or against us. It's one of those that you'll probably have people on either side of the fence on. For me, though, I think they came to the right conclusion."
