Spain’s Daniel Merida beat Argentinian lucky loser Sebastian Baez 6-4, 6-2 in the first round of the Paris Masters 1000 on Monday, on his debut at the event. Baez replaced Belgium’s Alexander Blockx, who withdrew with an ankle injury. It was their first meeting.

Merida, 22 and ranked No. 42, won his first ATP title in Umag this season. He also reached the Bucharest final, where Mariano Navone beat him 6-2, 4-6, 7-5. He will face 12th seed Tommy Paul or Holger Rune, who play on Tuesday, in the second round.
